CHICAGO?
Contract negotiations continue today between the Chicago Teachers Union and the Chicago Public Schools.?Teachers have pledged to strike next Monday, September 10, if a new conract deal is not reached.? The CTU House of Delegates is scheduled to meet at 4:30 p.m. today, when they could decide whether to extend the strike deadline.
CPS issued this statement today:? "CPS is working every day with the CTU to reach a fair resolution for our teachers and avoid any disruptions to our children's school year - and given what's on the table, there's no reason why an agreement can't be reached. And there's no reason why we can't continue to negotiate and teach kids at the same time just as we have over the last three weeks when 140,000 kids were already in school benefiting from the new full school day.?However if CTU leaders choose to strike, we will be prepared to provide our children with essential services, including breakfast and lunch and a safe environment with engaging activities. We hope to never execute this plan -- it is a last resort -- but we will not leave our children behind if CTU leadership moves forward with a strike."
CPS spokesperson Becky Carroll tells WGN they have made calls to parents, and sent letters, Emails, and text messages -- letting parents know they will be told details later this week on a contingency plan in the event of a strike.
