Yes, I do believe (and have seen first-hand) that we not only have an obesity epidemic on our hands but a grave and unhealthy misconception of food. In today?s times, so many have been trained to fear food, to fear calories and to fear fresh fruits and veggies (more than a plague) in the name of weight loss. I and our staff work tirelessly to help people understand that food is a necessity. That food is wonderful. That calories provide much needed energy that will sustain workouts that will build lean body mass. Food is magnificent. Without proper nutrition, and that includes the proper caloric intake, the battle will wage on for those who choose to continue following the masses and diet fads (and there are many out there).
Here at Utah Fitness Retreat we want to help people understand it is not about cutting calories or taking a shot or a pill that will get you the body you want. Many have already tried these methods with futile results. I can?t stand the false promises the misleading advertisements, the doctored pictures, the low carb diets, etc? I hope someday this will change! But, until then you have to start making healthy decisions for yourself. You must start to think, and think smart! There are no short cuts to a healthy body and mind.
One thing that concerns me greatly is how many in our industry are doing exactly what should not be done?creating more food fears and maybe even fueling eating disorders. If you are looking to attend a Fitness Retreat here are a few things to look for to help you make the right choice as you research the dietary programs:
#1. Be sure to ask about specific dietary guidelines? Do they put everyone on the same diet plan? Are male and female guests eating the same amount of calories? Are they giving each guest adequate complex carbs? Do they provide at least 3 plus servings of fruit each day? Is the plan they provide giving you proper balanced nutrition? At Utah Fitness Retreat, we pride ourselves on giving our guests proper nutritional and caloric needs so that our guests success goes on when they leave camp.
#2. Are you getting enough calories to build, repair and maintain muscles tone as you lose weight? This is very important to know since many camps out there do not provide adequate caloric needs for the individual. Do your research! Find out?do not just rely on information provided by their websites. Be proactive here. You need calories in order to boost your metabolism. A strong metabolism burns greater calories which equates to a greater lose in fat.
#3. Look for an eating program that provides ample varieties of foods. Lots of fresh fruits. If you are working out as much as many of the camps specify you need the nutrients coming from fresh fruits to build and boost your immune system. Here at Utah Fitness Retreat we preach and teach the importance of eating fruits in their season and do not be afraid of any fruit! Eat and enjoy them!
#4. Find out if they tailor workouts to YOU, specifically. Each person comes with their own set of physical, emotional and motivational hindrances, that if addressed on a personal basis, can be overcome. You will not receive more personal attention than our guests do here anywhere else. We watch out for you in every way! Each day is tailored to fit you and your needs!
#5. Finally, will you have a better relationship with food after attending a Fitness Camp? This is so important! You want to leave a camp knowing you have overcome food fears, broken down emotional barriers, tackled eating disorders and found an new and abiding love for yourself and who you are.
#6. Do they promote the High-Protein and Low-Carb. Diet phenomenon? This one is particularly troublesome for many reason. For one, individuals often lump all carbs into the naughty column. Not all carbs are created equal. We are constantly trying to teach people that complex carbs are essential and wonderful to help you get the body you want. Second, this type of eating makes way for greater food fears and possible eating disorders. If I can teach you one thing today it is that moderation in all things and a healthy relationship (and understanding) of food will reap greater rewards than the High Protein Diet. Be wary of this food format when choosing a program. We will not go this route! We want to teach, to help, to open guests eyes to what they are doing to their bodies and mind?for the better!
There is so much more I could surely go into to help you make an informed decision. I hope this helps though, and from here you can start asking better questions.
Food is not the enemy! I?ve said this a million times and will most definitely continue to do so. Success does not come easy. Changing your eating habits, your taste buds and your way of thinking about food is hard. However, it can be done and when you do it you will look at food and use food as it was meant.
