US ambassador surprised by Russian criticism

MOSCOW (AP) ? The U.S. ambassador to Russia says he has been surprised by the Russian Foreign Ministry's criticism of his remarks at a meeting with students.

Russia's Foreign Ministry castigated McFaul for saying Russia offered money to the leader of Kyrgyzstan for removing a U.S. base from its soil, saying his description of this and other issues was "deliberately distorted." It also accused McFaul of misrepresenting Russia's stance on issues such as the Iranian nuclear standoff and North Korea's nuclear program.

Michael McFaul said on his Livejournal blog Wednesday that his speech last week was intended to applaud U.S.-Russian cooperation.

McFaul said he probably "shouldn't have spoken so colorfully and bluntly" and promised to "work harder to speak more diplomatically."

Health & Fitness

Back pain can be severe or just a mild annoying twitch; however, it does strike millions of people each year. Even the most fit individuals among us can be subject to a backache from time to time. While most back pain is temporary, in some cases it can be long term and require medical treatment. Our goal with this report is to discuss a few of the reasons people are afflicted with back pain.

Being overweight has many health risks, and it turns out that back pain is one of them. Abdominal fat especially causes your body to become unbalanced, resulting on strain on your spine. So, it goes without saying, that the heavier you are the more strain and pain you are causing your back and spine. Needless to say, if you suffer from back pain, and you are overweight, it?s in your best interest to find a diet you can follow and shed the extra pounds. Exercise can be helpful, not only for losing weight, but for strengthening your back and abdomen so that you?re less likely to experience back pain. When it comes to reducing belly fat, the kind that?s most likely to cause back pain, it?s also essential to pay close attention to your daily diet.

Without realized them, there are other pertinent reasons for back pain that may arise within our everyday lives. As we all know the obvious ill effects that smoking can cause; it can also be the culprit for some back pain and other perils as well. That?s because smoking is harmful for circulation and even limits the amount of nutrients your organs and bones receive. Spinal degeneration is greatly affected by this down the road. The discs in your back are the base from which your vertebrae are located; without proper hydration these discs will not stay healthy. Dehydration is something we need to take heed of and make sure that our entire body is given the required amounts of water to maintain optimal health.

If you suffer from other illnesses, you may find that one of the side effects is back pain. Diabetes is a disease that can cause pain and discomfort in a number of areas, including the back. This is caused by the negative effect that diabetes has on the immune system. There are many nerve disorders ? called neuropathy ? that can occur with diabetes. This nerve damage ? neuropathy ? can strike many different areas, including your back. The easiest way to prevent neuropathy from developing, and causing pain, is to ensure that your blood glucose level is always within the range recommended by your doctor. Getting rid of your excess weight will not only help you control your diabetes but, as mentioned above, can help alleviate back pain due to stress on your spine.

With so many causes of back pain, it can be hard for even doctors to diagnose patients in every case. Perhaps you lifted a heavy box and the result was back pain. In that instance, it?s pretty easy to determine the cause for the pain. In other situations, the reason isn?t always as evident. The situations you can get into that may lead to back pain are many. We have only been able to touch on a few in this short article.

Dr. Jerry Sanchez is a writer for backpain buzzz as well as an advocate for the many back pain patients across America. Read more of his content on this site.

HP Wireless Audio

Wireless and networked audio is becoming increasingly ubiquitous. Bluetooth and AirPlay allow you to play music on their smartphones, tablets, and computers through their speaker systems, and DLNA lets you play music that's stored on their computers through their Blu-ray players and HDTVs over their home network. There aren't many simple, out-of-the-box kits to enable wireless audio on both ends, though. The HP Wireless Audio kit changes that, by offering an all-in-one solution to stream music from your computer to your speakers. It's easy to set up, but at $99.99 (direct), it's expensive for a device that lets you do things you probably can already do via other methods.

The HP Wireless Audio kit has two parts: a transmitter and a receiver box. The transmitter is a basic USB device shaped like a large, wide flash drive. It's slightly wider than would be convenient, as it can block other ports close to the USB port it's plugged into. The receiver box is a 1.2- by 4.5- by 2.9-inch (HWD) rectangular device with a port for the power cable, RCA stereo outputs, a standard-size 3.5mm output, and an S/PDIF digital output. It also has a small pairing button and two lights to show it's plugged in and paired with the transmitter.

To sync the transmitter with the receiver, you need to install the HP Wireless Audio Manager software on your PC and plug in the transmitter. Once you install it, you can pair your computer (with the transmitter attached) to the receiver by pressing the pairing button on the receiver and running the software. The default audio driver will switch to the USB transmitter. From that point, anything you play on the computer will output through the receiver to whatever speakers or home theater system you hook up.

Despite the claims of the HP Wireless Audio product page on HP's web site, the audio driver only supports stereo sound, so you can't take full advantage of a surround sound system. In other words, it only sends two channels of audio to your speakers or receiver, meaning you can't use it to link your PC to your 5.1-channel system to make games like Bioshock more atmospheric.

HP claims the wireless audio device has a range of 100 feet, but I didn't see that in my tests. While it streamed audio flawlessly to a receiver placed 15 feet away, it couldn't keep a reliable connection to an HDTV across the Lab. Mixmaster Mike sounded clean through our test surround system near my desk, but the rest of the Beastie Boys popped and crackled and occasionally cut out through the screen 80 feet away. In fairness, the PCMag.com Labs have more wireless interference than most homes, but you should still be wary if you want to use the HP Wireless Audio across your house. Despite the reception issue, there didn't seem to be any noticeable latency between the computer and the receiver. If the signal stays strong, you won't have to wait between clicking play and hearing the music on your speakers.

HP Wireless Audio easily lets you connect your PC to your speaker system, but there are easier and better ways to do it. For example, if you have a big home theater system, it may already support AirPlay for Apple product users, and it almost certainly supports DLNA for accessing music shared on a network. If you have a recent Blu-ray player or HDTV, you can access your music through your home network. If you don't, you can get a good Blu-ray player for less than $150 like the Editors' Choice LG BP620 ($129.99, 4 stars) and add DLNA support and many other entertainment features to your sound system. If you don't have a full sound system but still want wireless music, the Editors' Choice Logitech Mini Boombox ($99.99, 4 stars) offers a self-contained Bluetooth speaker and speakerphone that will work with your computer and mobile devices for the same price as the HP Wireless Audio kit.

BOISE, Idaho (AP) ? Hours after their plane crashed on a steep and snowy mountainside in Idaho, a California fireman, his wife and their daughter were airlifted to safety by National Guard rescuers.

The family was en route from California to Mountain Home, Idaho, when their Cessna 172 went down Saturday night, leaving them with head and back injuries, officials said.

One of them used a cellphone just after midnight to report that they had survived the crash.

A medical helicopter located the wreckage Sunday morning, but whiteout conditions prevented the aircraft crew from carrying out an immediate rescue, said Col. Tim Marsano of the Idaho National Guard.

Rescuers who walked through 6-foot snowdrifts and on 60-degree slopes reached the crash site first. They wrapped the family members in blankets and built a fire until a military helicopter could lift them out with a hoist.

"It was inhospitable for a landing," Marsano said. "The use of the helicopter was indispensable for this type of rescue operation."

The three were flown one at a time to a landing area about a half-mile from War Eagle Mountain in southwest Idaho's Owyhee County. They were later flown to Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise, where they remain in stable condition Monday.

It's unclear what caused the Cessna to go down. Photos taken by rescuers showed significant damage, including a broken front windshield.

Authorities identified the family as Brian Brown of Wilton, Calif., his wife Jayann Brown, and their adult daughter, whose name was not immediately available. They declined to be interviewed Monday, said hospital spokeswoman Elizabeth Duncan.

Brian Brown is a captain at the Cosumnes Community Services District Fire Department in Elk Grove, Calif. He is also Deputy Chief of Operation and Training with the nearby volunteer Wilton Fire Protection District.

Wilton Fire Chief Tom Dark said the couple was flying with their youngest daughter to Mountain Home to visit their oldest daughter. He was relieved they were in stable condition.

"That was our first concern, how he and the family were doing," said Dark. "Knowing what a good pilot he is, something had to have happened."

Dark said it was probably an unusual experience for Brown, a firefighter for more than two decades, to be on the other end of a rescue.

"When the shoe is on the other foot, it's kind of strange," he said.

South rises again to beat North in Tri-County All-Star football

?

Jonathan Hulyo loves a man-to-man defense.

The McCaskey quarterback says that type of defense allows him to showcase his arm and lets his skill-position teammates show off their speed. And with a man defense mandated in the Tri-County All-Star game, Hulyo was the brightest of all of the stars.

Hulyo threw for a game-high 328 yards and three touchdowns to lead the South to a 30-23 win over the North Saturday in the 11th Tri-County All-Star Football Game in Manheim.

"It's the kind of offense that we ran at McCaskey, and it's great against a man defense," said Hulyo, who fired touchdown passes of 68, 15 and 36 yards. "We have a lot of skill guys that have a lot speed and we took advantage of the defense."

The South, which held a 16-13 halftime lead, found itself trailing after the North began the second half with a two-yard plunge from Lancaster Catholic's Brandon Hollister (9-48). Manheim Central's Bryant Myer added a 27-yard field goal that started the fourth quarter.

"We weren't concerned about trailing in the second half," South coach John Manion said. "These players have been in games before where they were trailing. It wasn't out of reach because our defense kept us in it."

And Hulyo took advantage of his defense's stops.

Hulyo hit fellow McCaskey teammate Quashaun Davis in stride for a 36-yard touchdown pass that evened the game at 23-23 with 5:15 left to play. The South defense forced the North to a three-and-out on the next series to set up the game-winning drive.

Facing third and 10 at the North 44, Hulyo made the biggest play of the game with his legs when he scampered for 10 yards. He was injured on the play and watched from the sidelines as Lampeter-Strasburg's Jordan Groff took a quarterback trap 29 yards to put the South ahead 30-23 with 2:38 left.

"I wasn't disappointed at all that I wasn't on the field," said Hulyo. "That's why you have great teammates in an all-star game. Groff made a helluva run."

The North had one last shot to tie the game with a fourth-and-eight at the South 45. Lancaster Catholic's Andrew Dzurik (6 of 19, 143) fired a pass to the end zone that was picked off by Solanco's Tyler Stitz to seal the win for the South.

"It was an exciting game," Manion said. "To coach that many good kids, from that many good programs, was an honor."

Manheim Central's Caleb Walton put the North on the board first with an eight-yard run in the first quarter to make it 6-0. The South answered when Hulyo hooked up with Wilson's Jake Morgan (3-131) on a 68-yard bomb. Blaise Glover's extra point gave the South a 7-6 lead with 5:38 left in the first quarter.

Glover made it 10-6 when he booted a 43-yard field goal to begin the third quarter. The North regained the lead when Lancaster Catholic's Andrew Dzurik found Lebanon's Alex Kuhn for a two-yard scoring pass.

Glover (4-88) and Hulyo struck again for the South with 10 seconds left in the opening half. Hulyo floated a fade in the right corner of the end zone where Glover out-jumped a defender and tapped one toe in bounds to put the South ahead 16-13 at halftime.

Therapies for Autism - TheHealthCast.com

Doubt Cast on Usefulness of ?Sensory? Therapies for Autism

Experts say proof is lacking for these techniques in other disorders, too

MONDAY, May 28 (HealthDay News) ? Sensory therapies using brushes, swings and other play equipment are increasingly used by occupational therapists to treat children with developmental issues such as autism, but a large pediatricians organization says there isn?t much evidence that such therapies actually work.

Still, the group isn?t completely discounting the potential of sensory therapies ? it?s a ripe area for research, it noted.

But before parents spend the time and money on taking children to sensory therapy, they should know that, as of now, the techniques are largely unproven.

?It?s OK for parents to try these types of therapies, but there is little research backing up the effectiveness of these therapies and whether or not they improve long-term outcomes for kids with developmental disabilities,? said Dr. Michelle Zimmer, an assistant professor of pediatrics at Cincinnati Children?s Hospital Medical Center.

Zimmer is the co-author of a new American Academy of Pediatrics policy statement on what is often referred to as ?sensory integration therapy.? The policy statement appears online May 28 and in the June print issue of Pediatrics.

According to the pediatrician group, ?sensory processing disorder? should not be used as a standalone diagnosis.

No one disputes that children with conditions such as autism can have abnormalities in their responses to sensory stimuli, including sight, taste, touch and sound. For example, autistic children may have aversions to loud noises, to certain food textures or to being touched unexpectedly, Zimmer said.

But that doesn?t necessarily mean the problem is with their brain pathways for processing sensory information, as the term ?sensory processing disorder? implies.

Instead, some other issue could underlie their reactions to stimuli, such as a behavioral issue, said Dr. Susan Hyman, chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics subcommittee on autism and an associate professor of pediatrics at University of Rochester Medical Center, in Rochester, N.Y.

Instead of chalking up various aversions or compulsions to sensory processing disorder, health care providers need to consider what other developmental issues may be going on with the child, such as autism, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and so on, Zimmer said.

?There has never been a study that has shown that a child can have just sensory processing disorder, isolated from another developmental disabilities, such as autism or ADHD,? Zimmer said.

Sensory integration therapy got its start in the 1970s, when an occupational therapist described a theory for how a well-organized sensory system develops. Children, the therapist postulated, gradually learn to make use of information from a variety of sources at the same time in order to understand the world. The theory is that sensory dysfunction occurs when these systems don?t develop correctly.

In sensory integration therapy, occupational therapists put children on a ?sensory diet,? exposing them to different sights, smells, sounds and sensations, to improve the brain?s ability to process the information.

For now, however, whether it works remains a theory, Zimmer said.

Zimmer noted that occupational therapists in her hospital?s autism center uses sensory therapies, and anecdotally, she?s seen sensory therapy appear to help some children.

?We are happy to support parents who want to try to these therapies, but we also need to use caution in making sure that the use of these therapies is improving some outcome for their child,? Zimmer said.

In the absence of controlled clinical trials testing whether sensory therapies work, parents have to try to be objective, ask themselves tough questions about whether the treatment is really working, set specific goals and determine if the child is moving toward the target.

?Is it improving the child?s ability to function? That?s where more research needs to happen,? Zimmer said.

Hyman, who studies sensory differences in children with autism, agreed. ?The scientific testing of this intervention has not demonstrated that it is effective for all children as a standalone treatment,? she said. ?However, for individual children, it may be an important part of a total therapy package.?

Pediatricians should counsel families about the information out there on sensory therapies, she added.

?You don?t want to spend a lot of time money and energy on a treatment if it?s not right for them. They have to be prudent,? Hyman said. ?In the absence of data, parents have to utilize the information that?s available to them in making choices.?

New stem cell technique promises abundance of key heart cells

ScienceDaily (May 28, 2012) ? Cardiomyocytes, the workhorse cells that make up the beating heart, can now be made cheaply and abundantly in the laboratory.

Writing this week (May 28, 2012) in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a team of Wisconsin scientists describes a way to transform human stem cells -- both embryonic and induced pluripotent stem cells -- into the critical heart muscle cells by simple manipulation of one key developmental pathway. The technique promises a uniform, inexpensive and far more efficient alternative to the complex bath of serum or growth factors now used to nudge blank slate stem cells to become specialized heart cells.

"Our protocol is more efficient and robust," explains Sean Palecek, the senior author of the new report and a University of Wisconsin-Madison professor of chemical and biological engineering. "We have been able to reliably generate greater than 80 percent cardiomyocytes in the final population while other methods produce about 30 percent cardiomyocytes with high batch-to-batch variability."

The ability to make the key heart cells in abundance and in a precisely defined way is important because it shows the potential to make the production of large, uniform batches of cardiomyocytes routine, according to Palecek. The cells are in great demand for research, and increasingly for the high throughput screens used by the pharmaceutical industry to test drugs and potential drugs for toxic effects.

The capacity to make the heart cells using induced pluripotent stem cells, which can come from adult patients with diseased hearts, means scientists will be able to more readily model those diseases in the laboratory. Such cells contain the genetic profile of the patient, and so can be used to recreate the disease in the lab dish for study. Cardiomyocytes are difficult or impossible to obtain directly from the hearts of patients and, when obtained, survive only briefly in the lab.

Scientists also have high hopes that one day healthy lab-grown heart cells can be used to replace the cardiomyocytes that die as a result of heart disease, the leading cause of death in the United States.

"Many forms of heart disease are due to the loss or death of functioning cardiomyocytes, so strategies to replace heart cells in the diseased heart continue to be of interest," notes Timothy Kamp, another senior author of the new PNAS report and a professor of cardiology in the UW School of Medicine and Public Health. "For example, in a large heart attack up to 1 billion cardiomyocytes die. The heart has a limited ability to repair itself, so being able to supply large numbers of potentially patient-matched cardiomyocytes could help."

"These cells will have many applications," says Xiaojun Lian, a UW-Madison graduate student and the lead author of the new study. The beating cells made using the technique he devised have, so far, been maintained in culture in the lab for six months and remain as viable and stable as the day they were created.

Lian and his colleagues found that manipulating a major signaling pathway known as Wnt -- turning it on and off at prescribed points in time using just two off-the-shelf small molecule chemicals -- is enough to efficiently direct stem cell differentiation to cardiomyocytes.

"The fact that turning on and then off one master signaling pathway in the cells can orchestrate the complex developmental dance completely is a remarkable finding as there are many other signaling pathways and molecules involved," says Kamp.

"The biggest advantage of our method is that it uses small molecule chemicals to regulate biological signals," says Palecek. "It is completely defined, and therefore more reproducible. And the small molecules are much less expensive than protein growth factors."

Also contributing to the Wisconsin study, which was supported by the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation, were Cheston Hsiao, Gisela Wilson, Kexian Zhu, Laurie Hazeltine, Samira M. Azarin, Kunil K. Raval and Jianhua Zhang, all of UW-Madison.

RINEHART RAP: PM vows foreign workers will not take jobs from Aussies

PM Julia Gillard said?"jobs board'' would be created for Australians in the resources sector.?Picture: Gary Ramage Source: The Daily Telegraph

PRIME Minister Julia Gillard vowed that no foreign worker would take a job that an Australian could do, as she battled to contain the fallout from a government decision to approve the hire of 1715 migrant labourers on a major mining project..

Ms Gillard has been lashed by union leaders and members of her own party over yesterday?s announcement by the federal government that mining magnate Gina Rinehart would be permitted to hire up to 20 per cent of the construction workforce on her Roy Hill iron ore project from overseas.

Labor Senator Doug Cameron warned earlier today at the Prime Minister faced tough questions at a caucus meeting on Tuesday over the issue, which erupted in the midst of a government campaign against resources billionaires as it attempts to sell its ?battlers? budget?.

Speaking today in Melbourne, Ms Gillard attempted to douse the flames, saying that a "jobs board'' would be created that would give Australian workers information about what jobs were available in the resources sector.

"Yesterday I decided we would add to what we're doing to make sure that Aussies are getting the jobs,'' Ms Gillard said. "Companies won't be able to bring in foreign workers if there is an Australian ready, able and willing to do the work on the jobs board.''

Ms Gillard told union leaders in Canberra yesterday that she was ?furious? that the decision on the Roy Hill workers by Immigration Minister Chris Bowen had not been taken to cabinet, but that by the time she learned of the approval on Wednesday, Ms Rinehart?s Hancock Prospecting had already been informed of the decision and it could not be reversed.

A Labor source yesterday said Ms Gillard, whose leadership is under renewed threat, admitted at a meeting of angry union leaders and manufacturing sector representatives she only learned on Wednesday of her Immigration Minister Chris Bowen's decision to grant the approval.

Senior left-wing MP Doug Cameron said he was "gobsmacked" and said MPs had not been consulted by the PM's office or Mr Bowen.

"I am shocked that, while workers are being marched off the job at Kurri Kurri and Tullamarine ... Chinese workers are going to be marching on to the job in the Pilbara," he told The Daily Telegraph.

"There must be a proper process of consultation with the caucus and the ACTU.

I thought we were being pulled into a more consultative position, clearly not."

Paul Howes, AWU national secretary, demanded to know what "political genius" had granted the $9.5 billion Roy Hill iron ore mine temporary foreign labour in a week when 800 workers at Qantas and at the Hydro aluminium smelter had lost their jobs and said the decision was "sheer lunacy".

Mr Bowen said the project might stall without foreign labour. Managers of the Pilbara project told the government there was a lack of local workers in the region and it would need foreign labour to complete construction.

Mr Howes said the policy made a mockery of his AWU ally Treasurer Wayne Swan's campaign of bashing mining magnates Clive Palmer, Ms Rinehart and Andrew Forrest and spreading the benefits of the boom.

After a budget framed as sharing mining wealth with all Australians, Mr Howes said: "After months of the government making it clear Gina Rinehart is our enemy, where is the consistency?, what are we doing? It doesn't make sense."

The decision to grant the Roy Hill project an enterprise migration agreement to allow it to employ up to 1715 foreign workers during construction was announced the same day Mr Howes and other union leaders met with Ms Gillard for a manufacturing round table.

"I expressed to the Prime Minister our amazement at this decision," he said.

"I still can't get my head around what genius thought this was a good idea. It is sheer lunacy in a week where so many jobs have been cut."

The round table is trying to address the manufacturing crisis in which 130,000 people have lost their jobs since 2008.

The foreign workers are expected to come from the UK, Europe, India, China, South Korea and the Philippines. At least 6758 Australians will be employed on construction, including 2000 trainees.

"The temporary overseas workers will make up less than 20 per cent of the construction workforce, and the sooner construction is finished the sooner 2000 permanent jobs will be created for Australians," a Roy Hill spokesman said.

Mr Bowen defended the decision: "Governments make decisions based on the evidence before them."

What Oversight? China, Capsules And Chromium

The next PDUFA is not a done deal, but the notion that additional funding will be made available for the FDA to inspect manufacturing facilities near and far increasingly sounds like a good idea. Consider the latest development in China, where many pharmaceutical ingredients are made and have caused anxiety about the global supply chain. The State Food and Drug Administration there has found that 254 pharmaceutical companies, or 12.7 percent of all capsule makers, turned out unsafe capsules in a recent month-long inspection.

Of the 11,561 batches of drugs tested, 5.8 percent were found to contain excessive levels of chromium, according to the SFDA, which began the inspections after the Chinese media exposed that companies were making such capsules, according to the Xinhua news agency. Consequently, the SFDA ordered substandard drugs to be taken off shelves immediately. Authorities have so far investigated 236 capsule makers and ordered 42 to halt production, closed down 84 production lines, revoked production licenses of seven companies and referred 13 to the police.

Last month, media reports named several Chinese pharmaceutical companies that made capsules from industrial gelatin derived from scraps of leather material, which contains a greater amount of chromium than edible gelatin. Chromium, you may recall, can be toxic and carcinogenic if ingested in large amounts. As many as 13 commonly-prescribed drugs had been packed into capsules made with industrial gelatin containing a much greater amount of chromium than edible gelatin.

It is not entirely clear whether the capsules were distributed for local consumption only. Just the same, the episode underscores the larger concern that some Chinese companies that are intertwined in the pharmaceutical suppy chain operate as if China is a modern-day version of the Wild West. For instance, the health ministry there had reportedly banned the use of leather scraps in edible gelatin manufacturing seven years ago. But oversight was lacking until media reports highlighted the capsule problem.

In the aftermath of the heparin scandal, FDA commish Margaret Hamburg went on record as saying that she is encouraged by agency interactions with her Chinese counterparts (see here). Such infractions, however, cannot be considered too encouraging today. How far those extra PDUFA funds will ameliorate concerns remains to be seen. Meanwhile, watch your chromium levels.

SpaceX Dragon attached to International Space Station In spaceflight first

ScienceDaily (May 25, 2012) ? The International Space Station's Expedition 31 crew grappled and attached SpaceX's Dragon capsule to the space station Friday. This is the first time a commercial company has accomplished this type of space operation.

"Today marks another critical step in the future of American spaceflight," NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said. "Now that a U.S. company has proven its ability to resupply the space station, it opens a new frontier for commercial opportunities in space -- and new job creation opportunities right here in the U.S. By handing off space station transportation to the private sector, NASA is freed up to carry out the really hard work of sending astronauts farther into the solar system than ever before. The Obama Administration has set us on an ambitious path forward and the NASA and SpaceX teams are proving they are up to the task."

Following a series of system tests and a successful fly-under of the space station Thursday, the Dragon capsule was cleared by NASA to approach the station Friday. Dragon then performed a series of intricate test maneuvers as it approached the orbiting laboratory. These maneuvers were required to demonstrate the maneuvering and abort capability of Dragon prior to approaching and moving into a 65-foot (20-meter) "berthing box" where it was grappled by NASA astronaut Don Pettit using the station's robotic arm at 9:56 a.m. EDT.

European Space Agency astronaut Andre Kuipers installed the capsule on the bottom of the station's Harmony node at 11:52 a.m. NASA astronaut Joe Acaba completed berthing operations by bolting the Dragon to Harmony at 12:02 p.m.

"Congratulations to the SpaceX and NASA teams," said William Gerstenmaier, associate administrator for NASA's Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate at the agency's headquarters in Washington. "There is no limit to what can be accomplished with hard work and preparation. This activity will help the space station reach its full research potential and open up space-based research to a larger group of researchers. There is still critical work left in this test flight. Dragon-attached operations and cargo return are challenging and yet to be accomplished."

The Dragon capsule lifted off Tuesday from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The demonstration mission is the second under NASA's Commercial Orbital Transportation Services program, which provides investments intended to lead to regular resupply missions to the space station and stimulate the commercial space industry in America.

"The investments made by the United States to stimulate the commercial space industry are paying off," said Philip McAlister, director for Commercial Spaceflight Development at NASA Headquarters. "SpaceX achieved what until now was only possible by a few governments, and the company did it with relatively modest funding from the government.

The Dragon capsule is delivering 1,014 pounds of supplies to the station, which includes non-critical experiments, food, clothing and technology. Crew members will open the hatch to the capsule Saturday and unload the cargo during a four-day period. Dragon then will be loaded with 1,367 pounds of hardware and cargo no longer needed aboard the station in preparation for the spacecraft's return to Earth. Dragon and station hatches will be closed on May 30.

On May 31, the Expedition 31 crew members will detach Dragon from Harmony, maneuver it to a 33-foot release point and un-grapple the capsule. Dragon will deorbit approximately four hours after leaving the station, taking about 30 minutes to re-enter Earth's atmosphere and landing in the Pacific Ocean about 250 miles west of southern California.
