GOP lawmaker says 75-plus Dems are communists

(AP) ? Republican Rep. Allen West said he believes 75-plus House Democrats are members of the Communist Party, a claim that echoed Joe McCarthy's unsubstantiated 1950s charges that communists had infiltrated the top ranks of the U.S. government.

Addressing a town-hall meeting Tuesday in Florida, the freshman lawmaker was asked how many members of the American legislature are "card-carrying Marxists." West said "there's about 78 to 81 members of the Democratic Party that are members of the Communist Party." He did not provide names.

West's office said Wednesday that the congressman stood by the comments and was referring to the 76 members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, the largest group within the House Democratic caucus.

"The Communist Party has publicly referred to the Progressive Caucus as its allies," said Angela Melvin, a spokeswoman for West. "The Progressive Caucus speaks for itself. These individuals certainly aren't proponents of free markets or individual economic freedom."

West's office cited a May 2010 article on health care that appeared in the Communist Party USA pre-convention publication that described the Progressive Caucus and Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., as allies of the party but not members. The article, however, carried the disclaimer that Communist Party USA "takes no responsibility for the opinions expressed in this article or other articles in the pre-convention discussion."

The caucus, founded in 1991, includes 75 House members and one senator and describes its goals as economic fairness, civil rights, environmental protection, energy independence and global security. A congressional aide said the caucus was preparing a response to West.

The Palm Beach Post first reported the congressman's comments.

During the Cold War, McCarthy, a Republican senator from Wisconsin, claimed that communists and Soviet spies had burrowed their way into the federal government. He never produced the names or documentation to back up his claims.

The Vale Resort Golf Review : 19th Hole ? The Golf Blog From Your ...

The Vale Golf ResortThe Vale is one of the most complete resorts in the UK with several important factors making it ideal for a golfing break.

Being only 15 minutes from Cardiff and 2 and ? hours from London along the M4 it is easy to reach whilst allowing you to feel like you?ve gone far enough from home to be a proper trip. This location also allows for a night out in Cardiff or to combine golf with other activities such as Rugby at the Millennium Stadium or White Water Rafting which our group enjoyed!

The hotel offers large rooms which have en suite bathrooms and the leisure facilities are great for non golfers or to relax in after a tough round. Food is served in one of 2 restaurants with an option of private dining in the ? Boardroom? . There is a fine selection of food available as part of the package and breakfast in the morning is amongst the best of any golf resort.

The 2 golf courses complement each other with the Wales National being a tough test and the lakes giving away a few more chances for a high points score. The National starts off with a nice par four to ease you in before your confronted with the longest par 5 in Wales! This 600 + yard hole with tree lined fairways is a challenge especially when there?s water thrown in at the side of the green. The rest of the course is long and varied, meandering through the woods before you reach the resort again on the 17th. The Lakes course is shorter and flatter so good for the 2nd round of your trip. It?s easier to score points and is in the same fantastic condition as its sister course. After a round the clubhouse is a fantastic place to visit with lots indoor and outdoor seating with traditional golfers food on sale to enjoy whilst re-living your round!

The Vale is surely one of the best 2 venue resorts in the UK and thoroughly recommended for your next break! For more information on golf breaks in Wales simply visit golf holidays specialists Your Golf Travel or call 0800 043 6644

Titanic memorial cruise diverts due to medical emergency

An Irish Coast Guard helicopter evacuates an ill passenger from the Titanic Memorial Cruise ship MS Balmoral on April 10 in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Ireland.

By Joy Jernigan, senior travel editor

It's more rough waters for a cruise ship retracing the Titanic's doomed voyage 100 years ago this month.

One day after the MS Balmoral arrived late for planned festivities on Ireland's coast, the ship was forced to turn back Tuesday due to a medical emergency on board.

Rachael Jackson, public relations manager for Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, which operates the Balmoral, told msnbc.com that a passenger had fallen ill.

"The ship is turning around and heading approximately 20 nautical miles east to bring it nearer to the coast and within reach of a helicopter," the cruise line said in a statement. "Fred. Olsen and Titanic Memorial Cruises are working with the Irish Coastguard to co-ordinate the relevant arrangements, and making sure that all agencies involved are being kept informed."?

Miles Morgan, Managing Director of Miles Morgan Travel which chartered the journey, told Reuters that?"the passenger's condition is not thought to be life-threatening."

The ship, which departed Southampton, England, on Sunday, is currently traveling to New York. After a brief port call in Cobh on Ireland's south coast, the Balmoral sailed again late?Monday night.

The ship is carrying 1,309 passengers on a 12-night cruise. Among them are relatives of those who lost their lives, relatives of survivors and historians.

The Balmoral's itinerary includes a memorial service at the spot where the Titanic hit an iceberg and sank on April 15, 1912, in international waters in the North Atlantic. More?than 1,500 people aboard perished.

Also on Tuesday, the cruise ship Journey, carrying 440 passengers, left a New York City pier for Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Titanic Memorial Cruise, which arranged the cruises on both the Balmoral and the Journey, says the passengers will visit a cemetery where 150 victims of the Titanic are buried. The ship also will feature lectures about life on board the doomed ocean liner and will hold a memorial service at sea.

Ticket prices dropped in recent weeks from about $5,000 per person to $1,000 per person.?

Meanwhile, the Balmoral continued to be plagued by bad weather on Tuesday afternoon, forcing the cancellation of a floor show due to safety concerns for the performers.?

The memorial cruise has been five years in the making and organizers have tried to make it as authentic to the era as possible.?

Passengers from 28 countries, who have paid between around 2,600 pounds ($4,100) and 8,000 pounds each, are being offered dishes served on the Titanic and on-board lectures about the famous ship.?

The Balmoral was set to resume its voyage once the passenger was evacuated.

Like the Balmoral, the Titanic also experienced several delays, Jeff Jensen of Living Titanic Lectures told msnbc.com. After the Titanic's sister ship, the Olympic, collided with a ship in New York's harbor in 1911, workers were pulled off the Titanic to make repairs, which postponed the Titanic's?maiden voyage by three to four months.

?Even the morning it left, there was a two-hour delay,? Jensen said, referring to an incident in which the force of the Titanic's engines snapped the mooring lines of the liner New York in Southampton?s harbor, resulting in a near collision between the two ships.

In Southampton, England, hundreds turned out to remember the 100 anniversary of the Titanic's departure on its maiden ? and what turned out to be final ? voyage.

While at sea, the Titanic's radio broke down on the day before the ship's fateful collision with an iceberg,?Jensen said. As operators tried to catch up on a communications backlog, they neglected to deliver ice warnings to the captain. ?Right up until the day of the disaster, they were still feeling the effects of some of the delays.?

Despite the current holdups aboard the Balmoral, Jensen said he hopes the ship will soon be able to get back on course and stay true to its its focus: "to remember and honor the Titanic."

Information from the Associated Press and Reuters was included in this report.

Russia calls on Syrian opposition, to cease-fire

MOSCOW (AP) ? Russia has called on the opposition as well as countries that "influence them" to use their powers to bring about a cease-fire in Syria.

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Tuesday after a meeting with Syria's foreign policy chief that Syria's government "could have been more active and decisive" in implementing the peace plan.

He also called for a speedy deployment of international observers ? including Russians ? in the country.

Russia, along with China, has twice shielded its old ally Damascus from U.N. sanctions over Syrian President Bashar Assad's crackdown on a yearlong uprising that has killed more than 9,000.

But Moscow has also staunchly supported Annan's cease-fire proposals, urging Assad to take the first step by withdrawing his forces from Syrian cities in line with the peace plan.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian activists reported military attacks on two towns and said there was no sign of a large-scale troop pullout Tuesday, the day President Bashar Assad was to withdraw his forces from population centers under an internationally brokered truce.

The cease-fire deal hammered out by U.N.-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan was widely seen as the last chance for diplomacy, and its apparent collapse could push Syria even closer to an all-out civil war.

A 13-month uprising against Assad's regime has turned increasingly militarized in response to a brutal regime crackdown. The fighting is also threatening to spill across Syria's borders, raising the risk of a regional conflagration.

On Monday, Syrian forces opened fire across the Turkish and Lebanese borders, killing a TV journalist in Lebanon and wounding at least six people in a refugee camp in Turkey.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday accused Syria of violating the border and said his country is considering what steps to take in response, including measures "we don't want to think about." He did not elaborate.

Turkey, which has already given shelter to some 24,000 Syrian refugees, has floated the idea of creating security zones along its border, a step that could drag the Turkish military into the conflict.

Later Tuesday, Annan was to visit the Turkish refugee camp where Monday's shooting took place.

Refugees in the camp were skeptical about making any deals with the Syrian leader, who has gone back on his word in previous failed truce efforts. (AP) ?

"We believe in Kofi Annan, but Bashar Assad is not trustworthy," said refugee Dalal Fezo. "He was given 10 days to pull back his troops but he didn't."

Under Annan's plan, a Syrian troop pullback from towns and villages was to be completed Tuesday, with all hostilities to end by 6 a.m. Thursday.

Syria initially accepted the deal, but raised made last-minute demands over the weekend, saying it could not pull back forces without written guarantees that the rebel fighters would lay down their arms.

The Syrian opposition rejected the demand, saying that while it would go along with the truce, it does not recognize the Assad regime and would not issue the requested guarantees.

There were no signs of a large-scale troop withdrawal, though there seemed to be a drop in attacks by Syrian forces, said Rami Abdul-Rahman from the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The Observatory said regime troops fired shells at the town of Mareh in northwestern Syria on Tuesday. Actvists also said the central city of Homs was struck by mortar rounds and that forces carried out arrests in the Damascus suburb of Harasta. Mohammed Saeed, a resident of the Damascus suburb of Douma, said tanks that routinely patrol the streets were not visible Tuesday.

Caffeine, exercise may be protective against skin cancer: study

WASHINGTON, April 4 (Xinhua) ? The combined effects of exercise plus caffeine consumption may be able to ward off skin cancer, U.S. researchers reported Wednesday.

The findings were presented at the American Association for Cancer Research Annual Meeting 2012, held in Chicago on March 31- April 4.

The researchers evaluated the effects of caffeine and exercise on mice at high risk for developing skin cancer. Results showed that mice that took a dose of caffeine and exercised with a running wheel experienced 62 percent fewer skin tumors. The volume of tumors also decreased by 85 percent compared with the mice that did not consume caffeine or exercise.

Positive effects were found with either caffeine or exercise alone, but to a lesser extent. Researchers observed a 27 percent reduction in tumors in caffeine-only mice and a 61 percent reduction in tumor size. In the exercise-only mice, researchers found that tumor activity decreased by 35 percent and tumor volume decreased by 70 percent.

?We found that this combination treatment can decrease sunlight- caused skin cancer formation in a mouse model,? said Yao-Ping Lu, associate research professor at the Rutgers University. ?I believe we may extrapolate these findings to humans and anticipate that we would benefit from these combination treatments as well.?

Zip code as important as genetic code in childhood obesity

ScienceDaily (Apr. 10, 2012) ? Nearly 18 percent of U.S. school-aged children and adolescents are obese, as the rate of childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years. The prevalence of obesity puts children at greater risk of developing heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke and other illnesses, and of suffering severe obesity as adults. New study results indicate that where a child lives, including factors such as the neighborhood's walkability, proximity to higher quality parks, and access to healthy food, has an important effect on obesity rates. Researchers found that children living in neighborhoods with favorable neighborhood environment attributes had 59 percent lower odds of being obese.

"Obesogenic Neighborhood Environments, Child and Parent Obesity: The Neighborhood Impact on Kids Study" was published in a special theme issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. Led by Brian Saelens, PhD, of Seattle Children's Research Institute, this is among the first neighborhood environment studies to look at a combination of nutrition and physical activity environments and to assess children and their parents. It is also among the largest studies of its kind to use objective geographic information system (GIS) data to examine the physical activity and healthy food option attributes of a neighborhood related to obesity.

Researchers used GIS to assess Seattle and San Diego area neighborhoods' nutrition and physical activity environments. Nutrition environments were defined based on supermarket availability and concentration of fast food restaurants. Physical activity environments were defined based on environmental factors related to neighborhood walkability and at least one park with more or better amenities for children. Kids that lived in neighborhoods that were poorer in physical activity and nutrition environment had the highest rates of obesity -- almost 16 percent -- in the study. This figure is similar to the national average. On the flip side, only eight percent of children were obese in neighborhoods where physical activity and nutrition environments were positive.

"People think of childhood obesity and immediately think about an individual's physical activity and nutrition behaviors, but they do not necessarily equate obesity with where people live," said Dr. Saelens, who is also a professor of pediatrics at the University of Washington. "Everyone from parents to policymakers should pay more attention to zip codes because they could have a big impact on weight."

Fast food may not be as easy to come by in the Seattle area, based on the study. There were 3,474 fast food locations in San Diego County, as compared to 1,660 in King County, Wash. On a county-level block group average basis, San Diego had 2.0 fast food locations per block group, and King County had 1.1.

Numerous national health organizations have identified neighborhood environment and built environment, including healthy food and physical activity opportunities, as important factors in childhood obesity, including the Institute of Medicine and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "Our data support recommendations from these groups that we need to change our environments to make them more supportive of physical activity and nutrition," said Saelens.

Report says new evidence could tip the balance in aspirin cancer prevention care

Monday, April 9, 2012

A new report by American Cancer Society scientists says new data showing aspirin's potential role in reducing the risk of cancer death bring us considerably closer to the time when cancer prevention can be included in clinical guidelines for the use of aspirin in preventative care. The report, published early online in Nature Reviews Clinical Oncology, says even a 10% reduction in overall cancer incidence beginning during the first 10 years of treatment could tip the balance of benefits and risks favorably in average-risk populations.

Current guidelines for the use of aspirin in disease prevention consider only its cardiovascular benefits, weighed against the potential harm from aspirin-induced bleeding. While daily aspirin use has also been convincingly shown to reduce the risk of colorectal cancer and recurrence of adenomatous polyps, these benefits alone do not outweigh harms from aspirin-induced bleeding in average-risk populations. But recently published secondary analyses of cardiovascular trials have provided the first randomized evidence that daily aspirin use may also reduce the incidence of all cancers combined, even at low doses (75-100 mg daily).

The current review, led by Michael J. Thun, M.D., vice president emeritus of epidemiology and surveillance research for the American Cancer Society was not designed as a comprehensive review of the literature, but instead is a focused discussion of the key outstanding issues in using aspirin as a cancer prevention tool.

The report says recently published meta-analyses of results from randomized trials of daily aspirin treatment to prevent vascular events have provided provocative evidence that daily aspirin at doses of 75 mg and above might lower both overall cancer incidence and overall cancer mortality.

In six primary prevention trials of daily low-dose aspirin, randomization to aspirin treatment was associated with an approximately 20% reduction in overall cancer incidence between 3 and 5 years after initiation of the intervention (metaodds ratio [OR] = 0.81; 95% CI 0.67-0.98) and a 30% reduction during follow up more than 5 years after randomization (meta-OR = 0.70; 95% CI 0.56-0.88). Cancer mortality was also reduced during study follow up that happened more than 5 years after the start of aspirin use (meta-OR = 0.63; 95% CI 0.49-0.82) in analyses that included 34 trials of daily aspirin at various doses. Surprisingly, the size of the observed benefit did not increase with daily doses of aspirin above 75-100 mg. Notably, these meta-analyses excluded results from the Women's Health Study (WHS), a large 10-year-long trial of 100 mg of aspirin taken every other day, which reported no reduction in cancer incidence or mortality.

"The accumulating data from randomized clinical trials provide an exciting opportunity to reconsider the potential role of aspirin in cancer prevention," write the authors. They say several important questions remain unanswered, such as the exact magnitude of the overall cancer benefit and which individual cancer sites contribute to this benefit. "However, these new data bring us considerably closer to the time when cancer prevention can be integrated into the clinical guidelines for prophylactic treatment following regulatory review by the FDA and the European Medicines Agency."

Hosting Tips for Non Profits ? How to Make Your Funds Work More ...

Every not for profit corporation or non profit organization exists for a purpose. It must raise funds and through donations and sales of goods or services to meet those objective. A website plays a vital role in fulfilling those objectives. Most non profit managers have come to focus solely on websites as a means of finding donors. They must remember that a website must be balanced, it must serve the needs of a donor as well as the needs of those its striving to serve. Often time a non profit is also collaborating with other non profits to achive certain goals. All of these stake holders must be kept in mind when looking for a hosting account. A non profit generally doesn?t have many visitors so it can start with a small hosting account such as that of hostgator, to make most use of available funds a HostGator baby discount code can help further reduce the cost of first month of hosting.

What Will Be The Best SUV In 2013?

Article Directory :: Automotive Articles

The number of SUV's vying for the best SUV in 2013, are many and varied. While the Toyota Landcruiser Diesel is said to win hands down, there are other impressive and opulent contenders for this title. One would have to break down the models into different categories, and then put a finger on the best model in that category.

As stated above the Landcruiser with Outback dual-tank conversion, is an all-time favourite. As a strong contender for the title of best 2013 SUV, the SUV's durability and reliability are such that it literally becomes a family-choice car. However, running the Landcruiser is not budget-friendly. Even though it is a diesel operated vehicle, it guzzles gas, and its depreciation value is not all that much. Since the vehicle is so popular and so much in demand, the manufacturers have not found the need to make any important changes either inside, or on the exterior of the vehicle. Among the smaller versions of SUV's, the Ford Escape and Toyota Rav4, would stand head to head. The Ford Escape with its new 2013 look, still retains its reliability and delivers a good mileage in its two models of 1.6L and 2.0L. In respect of the Toyota Rav4, this vehicle also has a new 2013 look, and it continues to meet demands for reliability and great performance. Both SUV's are fuel efficient, and easy on the pocket. An SUV that would more serve the laid-back community, would be the Jeep Grand Cherokee - a rough and tough jeep that can traverse any terrain. The new 2013 diesel-operated model in this Jeep Grand Cherokee, is welcome. It can travel anywhere, and has models in different HP, in a range of prices.

Manufacturers of salon cars are now going in for SUV versions of their salon models. Lamborghini will soon unveil an SUV version in Beijing. The reason behind their choice of an SUV design, is because certain countries are more into buying bigger cars. Not lagging behind are the Porsche manufacturers. Their new SUV will be called the Porsche Cajun. Maserati is also scheduled to unveil its new super model SUV - with the famous Ferrari V8 engine, resulting in a top speed of 450 hp. General Motors has its 2013 Chevrolet Malibu ready, waiting to hit the dealer stores.

There are probably many other big and well known car manufacturers planning to introduce newer and better SUV's in the market. The abovementioned SUV's though, are at the moment, occupying the 2013 best SUV slots.

(AP) ? Alex Avila's drive sailed to deep right field, barely clearing both an outfielder and a wall.

An exhilarating opening series at Comerica Park was finally over, and the Detroit catcher could look forward to some much-needed rest.

"I'm too tired right now," Avila said. "I'm glad we have an off day (Monday). This weekend has been crazy."

Avila's two-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning gave the Tigers a stunning 13-12 victory over Boston on Sunday, leaving the Red Sox winless in three games under new manager Bobby Valentine.

Detroit swept the season-opening series, scoring 26 runs and winning twice in its final at-bat.

The Tigers trailed 10-7 on Sunday when Miguel Cabrera tied the game with a three-run shot off Alfredo Aceves in the ninth. Boston then scored twice in the 11th, but Mark Melancon (0-2) couldn't hold the lead.

Cabrera and Prince Fielder singled with one out before a wild pitch sent Cabrera to third and Delmon Young's sacrifice fly cut the margin in half. Avila followed with a drive to right and Cody Ross tried to make a leaping catch, but the ball appeared to hit a restraining gate just above the wall before caroming back onto the field.

Avila paused near second before being waved around the bases by the umpires. The play was not reviewed. Valentine said he asked and was assured by umpires that the ball had clearly hit the railing above the fence.

"You don't see those kinds of games at this level very often," Avila said. "There's really no rhyme or reason or explanation for it."

It's certainly rare for the Red Sox: They lost for the first time when scoring 12 runs or more since a 22-13 loss to the Chicago White Sox on May 31, 1970, according to STATS LLC.

Duane Below (2-0) got one out for the win ? even though Detroit manager Jim Leyland said he wouldn't be available ? in a game that lasted 4 hours, 45 minutes. Cabrera had five RBIs.

The Red Sox and New York Yankees are both off to 0-3 starts ? the first time that's happened since 1966, according to STATS LLC.

Boston is without newly acquired closer Andrew Bailey, who had surgery on his right thumb. Melancon and Aceves are the primary candidates to close in Bailey's absence, and both blew saves on Sunday.

"This is a work in progress," Valentine said. "We're three days in after losing our closer, and we're still trying to figure it out."

Nick Punto and Dustin Pedroia hit RBI singles in the 11th to give Boston the lead, but it didn't hold up. Adrian Gonzalez homered earlier for the Red Sox.

"Our guys played a hell of a game," Valentine said. "We had a walk-off loss on opening day, then got beat 10-0 and were down 4-0 in the first inning today ? but we fought back and took them 11 innings."

Detroit beat the Red Sox 3-2 in Thursday's opener on a ninth-inning hit by Austin Jackson, then cruised to a blowout Saturday. The Tigers seemed on their way to another easy win when Jhonny Peralta's three-run double in the first inning gave them a 4-0 lead, but starter Max Scherzer couldn't hold it.

Scherzer allowed seven runs on eight hits in 2 2-3 innings, but Boston's Clay Buchholz wasn't much better. He allowed seven runs on eight hits in four innings in what was his first start since June because of a stress fracture in his back.

Buchholz had gone 42 consecutive starts since the beginning of 2010 without allowing more than five earned runs.

Detroit reliever Daniel Schlereth allowed a two-run homer to Gonzalez on the first pitch he threw after coming on in the sixth. That gave Boston a 9-7 lead, and Vicente Padilla pitched four scoreless innings of relief for the Red Sox after replacing Buchholz.

The 34-year-old Padilla kept the powerful Detroit lineup off balance, at one point lobbing consecutive pitches of 54 and 52 mph on the stadium gun to Fielder in the seventh.

Punto made it 10-7 with an RBI infield single in the ninth, but Jackson and Brennan Boesch led off the bottom of the inning with singles, and Cabrera tied it.

"We've got to get this straight: It's not about Prince and me," Cabrera said. "We've got 25 guys, it's about the Detroit Tigers, it's about everybody here. We feel comfortable about everybody here so let's play ball and play hard."

NOTES: The Tigers placed RHP Doug Fister (strained left side) on the 15-day disabled list and recalled RHP Brayan Villarreal from Triple-A Toledo, moves they announced after Saturday's game. ... Valentine went out onto the field after Gonzalez was hit by a pitch from Phil Coke in the eighth. The umpires then warned both benches, which appeared to annoy the Boston manager even more.

(AP) ? Reigning U.S. Open champion Samantha Stosur put the latest matchup in the Williams sisters' sibling rivalry on hold by rallying past Venus Williams at the Family Circle Cup.

The second-seeded Stosur won five of the last six games for a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 victory in the quarterfinals on a chilly, windy Friday at the season's first clay-court event. Stosur now has a chance at knocking out both Williams sisters on consecutive days when she meets Serena in Saturday's semifinals.

While Stosur had never beaten Venus Williams before, she's had success against Serena. Stosur beat her to win the U.S. Open title last September and won their only match on clay in the 2010 French Open quarters.

"For sure, clay's not my favorite surface," said Stosur, the 2010 Family Circle champion. "It's always tough playing Serena no matter where."

Serena Williams advanced when Sabine Lisicki twisted her left ankle early in the opening set and had to withdraw after five games.

The buzz for a Williams' sisters showdown had grown all week as the two Americans moved through the draw. Both came into Friday without losing a set and appeared ready to settle some family business at the Family Circle Tennis Center.

This was Venus Williams' first clay-court tournament since 2010 and her second event since a bout with the autoimmune disease Sjogren's Syndrome kept her out of the game since last summer's U.S. Open. Williams won four times last week at the Sony Ericsson Open and had carried that success into the Family Circle quarters.

She could not get past Stosur, though, and won't play again until next month in Madrid.

"I have come so far, so far from the U.S. Open," Venus Williams said.

Stosur shook off some tired legs from an earlier match ? the Australian was forced to come back Friday morning and finish her rain-delayed match from the night before ? and some wayward serves midway through while moving past Williams.

Stosur is seeking her second Family Circle Cup title in three years.

Stosur came out fast for a 5-2 lead in the opening set. Williams mishit Stosur's 113 mph serve on set point.

That's when Stosur's own service game began to fall apart. She struggled to get the ball in play and Williams took full advantage of Stosur's slower second serves. Stosur had the chance to go up 3-1 in the set, but sent a forehand wide. Venus Williams eventually won to tie the set at 2-all and closed it out by winning four of the next six games.

Williams carried the momentum ? along with the support of the crowd ? into the final set and held serve to lead 2-1. Stosur, though, regained her accuracy and Williams began to tire. Stosur only lost two points over the final two games. Willilams slowly walked to the net after her service return went wide on match point.

"I did my best," Venus said. "I know I can play even better. My errors didn't help my cause. At this point, I'm just learning and learning and learning more."

Williams is schedule to play in Madrid, Rome and the French Open as she strives to make the U.S. Olympic team for the London Games this summer. She said her plan was to head home, practice and get stronger for the competition ahead.

She has risen about 60 spots in the rankings from 134th before Key Biscayne to now. "I've never been so happy to be 70th" in the world, Williams said.

Early on, it looked as if Serena Williams might have a fight on her hands as Lisicki stood toe-to-toe with the 13-time Grand Slam winner. However, as Lisicki moved to her left after a shot, she apparently hurt her left ankle and fell to the court. She immediately got up and called for the trainer, who re-taped her ankle so the 22-year-old German could continue.

It was obvious Lisicki couldn't move as she had. She played three more games before retiring in tears. Serena Williams came over to console Lisicki, hugging her near the net and applauding along with the crowd as she left stadium court.

Lisicki was having an MRI. "We'll see what the doctors say and we'll go from there," she said.

Williams has had her share of injuries that forced her to miss major tournaments. She told the young German that she had time to heal and would be back.

"I said, 'It's OK. It's not the French Open. You've got time to get better,'" Williams said.

Ninth-seeded Lucie Safarova ousted No. 4 seed Vera Zvonareva, 6-3, 6-3. Safarova will meet No. 14 seed Polona Hercog in the semifinals. Hercog defeated 13th-seeded Nadia Petrova 6-1, 6-2.
