Famigo, the Austin-based startup building a directory of family-oriented and kid-friendly mobile apps, announced today that it has raised $1 million in funding led by Silverton Partners. Also participating in the round were Zilker Ventures, Liahona Ventures, and CapitalFactory. The company, which currently offers an online directory of apps as well as parental control software for Android, says it will use the new funding to help continue development of its platform and expand access worldwide.

Henderson Franklin Celebrates 20 Years of Providing Legal ...

FORT MYERS, Fla. (March 29, 2012) - On March 27, 2012, dressed in tuxedos and evening gowns, Henderson Franklin's Employment Law Practice Group celebrated the 20th Anniversary of its annual employment law seminar, HR Law & Solutions, at Sanibel Harbour Resort with record-breaking attendance. Mother of 9/11 Hero Addresses Carson Daly, Defends "Strong, Heroic Gay Men"

Carson Daly is still feeling the heat for comments he made yesterday morning on his radio show, and this time the source is the mother of a 9/11 hero.

Following Daly's on-air joke that implied gay people were too weak to subdue an airline pilot - in this case, the JetBlue captain, Clayton Osbon, who simply lost control of his senses aboard a flight earlier in the week - Alice Hoagland has penned a letter to the host of The Voice.

Hoagland is the parent of Mark Bingham, one of the passengers on 9/11's United Airlines Flight 93, who helped wrestle control from terrorists and crashed the plane in a Shanksville, Pennsylvania field, saving countless lives in the process.

"Yes, my gay son was known in our family for bringing me flowers on my birthday and Mother’s Day," Hoagland writes. "He also was known for careening down the rugby pitch, and, on the morning of September 11, 2001, for charging unarmed down the aisle of a doomed Boeing 757 to face knife-wielding Islamist thugs in a hijacked cockpit.

"No one among his pick-up team of fellow passengers was asking 'Are you straight? Are you gay?' No one doubted that a guy who weighed 220 and stood 6’4” tall - who could run over a charging opponent on the field, and ran with the bulls in Pamplona earlier that summer - would be an asset to a desperate group trying to overcome a threat onboard an airliner.

"The world has its share of strong, heroic gay men. Gay men in sports uniforms and military uniforms have been winning America’s games and fighting America’s battles for a long time: quietly, humbly, and in the face of vicious bigotry.

"I hope you and I may have an opportunity to talk sometime. I prefer to believe you didn’t mean to offend. Good luck to you."

Daly has since spoken to GLAAD and followed his Tweeted apology with the following statement:

We live in a time where gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender individuals find courage every day to overcome adversity, stand up to bullying and find equality. I'm truly saddened that my words today suggested otherwise. I've long been a supporter of Gay and Lesbian rights, and I'm saddened that my comments, however unintentional, offended anyone, specifically members of the LGBT community. The fact that I have hurt anyone is devastating. I'm not that guy. I'm proud to be an ally of the LGBT community and will continue to fight with them.

The smartphone juggernaut continues?in the U.S. According to a new Nielsen report,?49.7 percent of mobile subscribers owned smartphones as of February. That's up from 36 percent a year ago.

Two-thirds of those who got a new phone in the last three months chose a smartphone over a feature phone, the research firm says. ?

Android-based phones lead the U.S. smartphone market with a 48 percent share, while Apple's iPhone is at 32 percent, and BlackBerry is at 11.6 percent.

"Among recent acquirers who got their smartphone within the last three months, 48 percent of those surveyed in February said they chose an Android and 43 percent bought an iPhone," the research firm said. Only 5 percent opted for a BlackBerry.

Another report, from comScore earlier this month, said that Android is on nearly half the phones ?carried by the country's 101 million smartphone subscribers, while about another third use iPhones.

RIM, which makes BlackBerry, has continued to decline as a favorite among U.S. purchasers. In the summer of 2011, Nielsen pegged RIM's U.S. market share at about?20 percent.

In Nielsen's?"State of the Media: The Mobile Media" report, released in December and based on a survey of 25,000 mobile customers,?the research firm said smartphone ownership is predominant among those age 18 to 34.

Nearly two-thirds -- 64 percent -- of 25? to 34-year-olds and 53 percent of 18? to 24-year-olds own smartphones, "and they have led in smartphone penetration compared to other age groups since 2009."

Cat haters may have had a scary experience with a kitty as a child. Since fear is at the root of hatred, it?s highly likely these unfortunate folks have never been properly introduced to the species that cat lovers consider purrfect companions.

On the other hand, since heredity plays a part in the way we behave, ailurophobes may simply be devoid of?the?cat-loving gene.

Many of these folks go to great lengths to stay as far away from a feline as possible. They claim cats are sneaky, aloof and manipulative. Since cats have the reputation of being independent, they are often thought of as self-centered, disloyal and very difficult to train. Some feel that cats aren?t real pets; they are merely acquaintances.

In fact, in the presence of a cat, a true ailurophobe, out of sheer terror of a tiny predator may start shaking, have difficulty breathing and break into a sweat.

Of course there is a considerable difference between someone who is feline-phobic and those who dislike cats in general. Some, however, since they are so cute and cuddly, enjoy playing with kittens. It is only when they mature into adults that they are no longer admired. I just cannot wrap my brain around how anyone who claims to love animals wouldn?t immediately fall in love with a kitty. After all, in some societies cats have even been worshipped as gods.

Since many cat haters love dogs, perhaps the cat?s misunderstood nature is somehow threatening to them. ?As ?pack animals?, evolving from wolves, domesticated dogs are social in nature and readily fit into our human hierarchy. ?They are often referred to as ?mans? best friend,?and considered easy to control.

On the other hand cats in the wild are generally solitary hunters, (with the exception of lions), raise their young alone, and interact with other cats mainly for breeding. Since education about cats is so important, understanding feline behavior can lead to a true appreciation of this incredible species.

But one thing I know about folks that loudly profess their hatred of cats; the bigger the outcry, the harder they fall. Ask anyone who has once detested kitties, but has converted to the other side, how they feel about their cats. The adoration is truly remarkable.

A force-feedback steering wheel. It's quite literally the stuff of racing games, and AT&T labs, along with Carnegie Mellon, is researching the possibly of throwing similar tech into your real-world whip. According to Technology Review, this isn't the first time haptic feedback has been tested as a driving aid, although past tests have, notably, resulted in "fewer turn errors" by those behind the wheel. Best of all, the tech is capable of sending more than just navigation cues -- it could certainly be useful in a Telsa. So when can you expect to find a force-feedback steering wheel in your ride? Technology Review cites Kevin Li, an AT&T Labs researcher on the project, who says the main hurdle is making something that people will just "get," and that it's still "years" away from becoming a possibility. While there's no photos of the setup just yet, a full report on the research will get released in June. Hey, there's always Forza and Gran Turismo, at least for now -- right?

Polo mogul Goodman found guilty in Florida DUI crash

Testimony is now under way at the DUI manslaughter trial of Florida millionaire John Goodman. The case received nationwide attention after the defendant adopted his adult girlfriend to protect his assets. NBC's Mark Potter reports.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- A jury on Friday found John Goodman, a South Florida polo mogul, guilty of DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide in the Feb. 12, 2010 crash that killed Scott Wilson.

Police say a drunken Goodman, the founder of the International Polo Club Palm Beach, rammed his black Bentley convertible into Wilson's car two years ago, causing it to roll into a canal. Goodman is accused of leaving the scene and waiting nearly an hour to call 911 as Wilson died.

Goodman was later found to have a blood alcohol level more than twice the legal limit.

Prosecutors argued Goodman likely had 16 to 18 drinks before he got behind the wheel, and said Goodman walked away from the crash scene and called his girlfriend and a friend before finally calling 911, WPTV reported.

Goodman's attorney, Roy Black, said his client only a had a few drinks that night. He claimed?the Bentley malfunctioned and accelerated into the intersection. Black also said Goodman drank after the crash to ease his pain.

The case made headlines?after Goodman?legally adopted his girlfriend, in what was seen as a legal manuever to protect some of his wealth?from a wrongful death lawsuit filed by Wilson's family. Goodman settled with the Wilson family for an unspecified amount earlier this month, shortly before the criminal trial began, according to WPTV.

Goodman is facing up to 30 years in prison when he is sentenced on April 30.

After nearly two weeks of testimony, the prosecution and defense made their closing arguments on Thursday before turning the case over to the six jurors late in the day.

They deliberated for about a half hour before deciding end their deliberations and resume Friday morning.

"The jury in the Goodman case exercised sound judgment in its analysis of the factual and expert evidence in this trial" said State Attorney Peter Antonacci in a statement after the verdict. "Scott Wilson was a young man with a bright future and his life was tragically cut short. I hope that Scott's family now experiences some closure so that the healing process can go forward in this particularly tragic event."

Scott Wilson's mother thanked the jury after the verdict.

"I?know that it took a lot for them to come up with a conclusion and justice has been served,"?Lily Wilson?said.?"I'm?always gonna miss my son."

How Many Digital Friends Do You Have? Facebook, Intimate ...

If you haven?t accepted that social media is becoming an increasingly important factor in the socialization of youth and adults alike, you?re simply behind the times.

Every generation from Baby-Boomers to Millennials utilize mobile devices and online technology to communicate and interact.

Online communication technology is now a staple of peoples? daily life, and because of this people are able to communicate more often with more people than ever before.

This increase in communication would intuitively appear to be a positive thing, as research has revealed the value of intimate relationships on well-being and happiness.

However, whether online social networking lends itself to the same level of meaning and significance in relationships is another question.

A recent article in Developmental Psychology (2012) points out the large extent of online peer interactions, noting that, ?90% of undergraduates on the majority of college campuses and 90% of high school students use social media sites,?creating online profiles of themselves and adding other users to their list of ?friends? on the network.?

Of particular relevance is the ubiquitous use of the social network site Facebook, which is the fourth most visited website on the Internet and has over 800 million active users.

The same article explored the?relationship between large networks of social connections on?Facebook and the development of intimacy and social support for college students. Eight-eight students, more of than half of which were female, were surveyed for this study.

The findings revealed that sites like Facebook are transforming the context of personal relationships in a potentially beneficial way.

For instance, the findings emphasize that the Facebook ?audience? serves psychological and social value. This value appears to come from communication with both close connections and unknown others.

The results showed that larger networks and estimated larger audiences predicted higher levels of life satisfaction and perceived social support through Facebook.

An example of this is shown through observing participants status-updates, which sends communication to someone?s entire contact list. The dominant use of status-updates in this study was to express one?s current emotional state, and served essentially as a form of intimate self-disclosure or emotional connection with others.

As well, the research revealed that students with more close contacts were found to communicate both privately and publicly more frequently, and that students were able to maintain close relationships from the past as they transition into college and beyond, thus serving as a means of social support.

The breadth of connections for most Facebook users is continuing to increase. People are expanding the number of close relationships they produce, as well as the acquaintances they make with total strangers, and it can be predicted that this will continue to grow.

Despite the need for further research to support these findings, the Facebook platform appears to offer social support and a process for nurturing relationships for many young adults.

Nokia drops another 1,000 employees, Finnish plant focusing on software

To say it's been a rough year for Nokia would be a huge understatement. And things are only going to get worse before they get better. Case in point: the company just finalized an agreement to cut up to another 1,000 jobs (which we knew was coming), all at its plant in Salo, Finland. The cuts will not happen all at once, instead positions will be phased out over the course of the year, with most layoffs coming before the end of June. For those in Western Europe it's another batch of manufacturing jobs heading to Asia, for Nokia it's simply part of a restructuring plan designed to help it stop the bleeding. The staff that remains will focus on installing software that caters to European customers. After several quarters of bad news and then a complete shift in smartphone platforms it only makes sense that Nokia would find itself in dire straights. Still, in a country where unemployment hovers at around eight percent, we're sure no amount of national pride will make people feel better about losing more jobs.

Update: In case it wasn't clear, we just wanted to clarify that these are cuts that Nokia had already announced. The company has simply struck a deal with its employees making the move official.

NY state budget talks may pause after pension cuts

(Reuters) - New York state looked on track to easily beat its April 1 deadline for passing its budget the second time in a row, but political analysts say that after several hurdles were cleared last week, optimism appears to have withered.

The negotiations might come closer to the deadline due to new pressure on legislators from unions angry about Democratic support for new legislation cutting pension benefits as well as from lawmakers upset about new lines redrawing election districts.

Governor Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat, has proposed a $132.5 billion budget to close a deficit of $2 billion.

When asked on Tuesday about getting his plan done this week, he told TALK 1300 AM radio show: "I just want to get it done by April 1."

Last year's budget was the first on-time accord in five years.

Monday's decision by New York's biggest public employees union, the CSEA, to cut donations and support for lawmakers who backed cuts in pension benefits could slow negotiations. This puts more pressure on legislators - all of whom stand for re-election in November - to try to offer unions other budget sweeteners.

Carl Korn, a spokesman for New York State United Teachers, which represents teachers around the state, said: "There are still opportunities for the legislature to cast the 'right' votes."

His union and others seek more aid for education and health care and want the state's securities law, the Martin Act, expanded so that public pension funds can recoup recent investment losses that resulted from fraud.

Public unions have a number of items on their wish list, including avoiding budget cuts by raising the corporate alternative minimum tax to 3.5 percent from 1.5 percent, said Ron Deutsch, executive director of New Yorkers for Fiscal Fairness, an advocacy group that backs these initiatives.

Business groups and wealthy individuals say they already have done enough to raise revenue, citing last year's enactment of a payroll tax to help fund the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and a personal income-tax hike for the well-to-do.

Democrats typically rely on unions for donations and get-out-the-vote programs. Their support, then, is crucial to Cuomo's hopes to keeping the Assembly's big Democratic majority and overturning the Senate's GOP leadership, which has only a two-vote margin, political analysts said.

A spokesman for Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, a Democrat, had no immediate comment.

A spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos, a Republican, said the state Senate wants an ontime budget.

"The governments must act now and act vigorously, in order to reduce the significant human and financial burden of cancer in the future?, said the study authors. Some of the cancers which can be easily prevented with right diet and exercise are bowel cancer and breast cancer.

In order to reach at the above given conclusion, the study authors said that they have conducted a research for about 15 years and have also studied the population-based cancer epidemiology and biostatistics.

The study has found that they diet and right exercise is the most economic way to remain safe from cancer.
