Construction to add 11.1% to UAE's GDP in 2015Construction - Zawya

New contracts and ongoing projects to boost building
After going through a slowdown during the global financial crisis in 2008 and with the current recovery in GCC economies, the UAE construction industry is projected to exhibit sustainable growth prospects in the next few years, according to a recent Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry study.
Construction as a percentage of GDP of the UAE reached 10.6 per cent in 2008 and 10.3 per cent in 2011 while for 2015 and 2021 the sector's contribution as a percentage of UAE GDP is projected to record 11.1 per cent and 11.5 per cent respectively.

According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the population of UAE is expected to reach six million by 2015 from 5.4 million in 2010. The increase in expatriate population, which accounts for more than 80 per cent of the country's population, constitute the main growth drivers for increasing demand for residential and commercial property units in the country.

The growth in real GDP is projected by the IMF to reach 4.4 per cent in 2015 from 3.3 per cent in 2011, signifying a revival of the overall economy which augurs well for the construction industry, says the study.

In 2011, the UAE recorded the highest construction project value, reaching $319.1 billion, accounting for 51.1 per cent of the total construction project value in top 100 projects in the GCC region.

Indicative of the above statement is the list of the key construction projects both commercial and residential.

The UAE was followed by Saudi Arabia at $218.9 billion (accounting 35 per cent of the total construction project value). Qatar accounted for 8.9 per cent of the total construction project value followed by Oman and Kuwait accounting for 3.2 per cent and 1.8 per cent of the top 100 projects respectively.

According to Meed Projects, there were 46 construction projects (in oil and gas, real estate, infrastructure, transport and petrochemicals) recorded across the GCC region in 2011. The total value of these projects reached USD $billion last year compared to $756 billion in 2010.

In its quest to become an international investment hub, the UAE has pushed forward major construction projects in infrastructure and residential/non-residential segments. Extraordinary growth in transport infrastructure has been observed, especially in projects such as the $7.8 billion expansion of Dubai International Airport, and the $6.8 billion Abu Dhabi International Airport re-development project.

According to Business Monitor International, the majority of projects in the UAE's construction industry involve 38 per cent of the total projects to be finalised in energy and utilities, 31 per cent in construction, 29 per cent in transport and 2 per cent in social infrastructure.

The study informs that favourable government policies, such as permitting non-UAE/GCC national freeholds and leaseholds in designated areas of the UAE, will attract foreign direct investment (FDI) in construction as an increasing number of foreigners will focus on acquiring properties across the country.

As of 2010, Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council has engaged multi-unit building developers to allocate 20 per cent of residential gross floor area to middle income population groups. This is expected to increase housing supply for the middle and low income population groups.

Last but not least, in 2011, UAE's federal government extended visas of real estate investors from six months to three years offering a significant boost for new investments in UAE's construction industry.

Challenges facing the industry

In 2011, the UAE residential construction industry showed limited signs of recovery, struggling to reach its pre-crisis levels, while putting on hold a number of significant big projects across the country.

However, from the beginning of 2012, the residential construction industry revealed some signs of stability (particularly in Dubai) driven mainly by the repercussions of the regional Arab Spring, reinforcing UAE's reputation as a safe haven in the MENA region.

In the short term, the outlook of the UAE construction residential industry may be affected due to the prevalent oversupply of residential units in the market but, in the long term, it will gain momentum based on the optimism of a rising population and a more stable economic growth path.

The UAE commercial office construction sector has historically witnessed robust growth leading to an oversupply of commercial office units. In turn, this oversupply led to high vacancy rates finally resulting in a moderate decline in UAE property prices.

The study indicates that rental yields in the short term will continue to be under pressure due to declining rentals and high vacancy rates. However, the commercial construction industry will continue to benefit from the premium on rental yield as compared to US and EU markets attracting significant FDI in the long term.

In the near future, favourable government policies of the GCC countries, particularly that of the UAE, are projected to attract more overseas companies to the country's construction sector. This trend is expected to continue in 2013 as a stream of new construction and infrastructure contracts and ongoing projects will further boost UAE's construction industry growth, concludes the study.

Millinocket firefighters save several pets from fire - Bangor Daily News

MILLINOCKET, Maine ? Firefighters battled thick smoke to rescue two cats and a dog from a fire that damaged the cellar and living room of an Aroostook Avenue house Sunday morning.

Firefighters had to stop homeowner Thomas Jameson from going back into his house at 423 Aroostook Ave. to retrieve his pets after he had rescued a dog and a cat, Fire Chief Andrew Turcotte said.

With flames burning into the cellar ceiling and first-floor living room and smoke thick throughout the rest of the house, Turcotte went inside and found a dog and a cat and Firefighter-EMT Sam Monteith rescued a cat, Turcotte said.

?It was the funniest thing,? Turcotte said. ?The cat I found was just lying there, unresponsive, and I thought it was dead. I shook it a little bit and it came right alive. It hissed and clawed at me. I was thinking, ?Oh my goodness.??

Firefighters have pet-sized breathing masks to help resuscitate pets, but didn?t need to use them on the animals. Jameson, however, was treated for smoke inhalation at Millinocket Regional Hospital after refusing treatment at the scene, Assistant Fire Chief Thomas Malcolm said.

The fire apparently started in an ash box in the basement directly beneath Jameson?s living room fireplace. The ash box is large, approximately 16 inches across and about two feet deep, and embedded in cement, but was piled high with ash because it hadn?t been cleaned in a while, Turcotte said.

?It appears there was quite a bit of hot ash in there,? he said.

Ash that fell to the box from a fireplace fire the family started the night before apparently ignited thick building timbers hanging over the ash box. Turcotte said the timbers might also have ignited because they were badly dried out after decades of exposure to ash box heat.

Turcotte smelled smoke at about 8:55 a.m. and either he or a neighbor called 911. When firefighters arrived about five minutes later, heavy black smoke was pouring from the front door, Turcotte said.

Thick basement smoke and intense heat made finding the seat of the fire difficult, but firefighters doused the flames before they could spread very far into the living room area, Turcotte said.

East Millinocket firefighters were called immediately to the scene because Millinocket is down one engine, and they assisted in fighting the flames, Turcotte said. The flames might have eaten into the first floor and become uncontrollable had the fire burned much longer.

?They did a really good quick stop,? Malcolm said. The fire ?could have gone right up the chimney chase but it didn?t. They saved a lot with the initial knockdown.?

The Jameson family won?t be able to occupy the house until repairs are made. Damage estimates run from $30,000 to $40,000.

The fire is Millinocket?s second in about a month. A malfunctioning space heater sparked a fire that destroyed most of a second-floor apartment on Katahdin Avenue on Nov. 28.

Sunday?s fire, Turcotte said, underlined the importance of keeping fireplaces clear of ash buildup. He encouraged homeowners to have their chimneys and fire boxes cleaned professionally or at least emptied.

Stocks extend losses ahead of 'fiscal cliff' talks

22 hrs.

Stocks took another beating for the fifth-consecutive session Friday, with the Dow logging its worst weekly drop in six, after a report that President Barack Obama said he is not going to make a new budget offer during the "fiscal cliff" summit at the White House.

Instead, Obama plans to lay out what is clear can pass with a majority in both the House and Senate and what most American people support, which includes protecting everyone making $250,000 and less from seeing their taxes go up.

The?Dow Jones Industrial Average?dropped 158.20 points, or 1.21 percent, to close at 12.938.11, dragged down?by?Hewlett-Packard?and?ExxonMobil.

The?S&P 500?slumped 15.67 points, or 1.11 percent, to end at 1,402.43. The?Nasdaq?declined 25.60 points, or 0.86 percent, to finish at 2,960.31. The?CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, spiked to close above 22 for the first time since June.

For the week, the?Dow?tumbled 1.92 percent, the?S&P 500?fell 1.94 percent, and the?Nasdaq?dropped 2.01 percent. Most Dow components ended in the red for the week, dragged by?Hewlett-Packard?and?Microsoft, while?Bank of America?squeezed out a small gain.

"Traders are so cautious and investors are also worried," said Stephen Guilfoyle of Meridian Equity Partners.?

President Barack Obama?met with a bi-partisan group of congressional leaders?at the White House, just days before the deadline to reach a deal or see the a series of automatic spending cuts and tax hikes come into force. If a deal is not possible, Obama and the leaders would leave the resolution to the next Congress to address in January.

Earlier, stocks came off their lows as investors latched onto a glimmer of hope amid reports of?progress toward a potential deal. According to sources, negotiations revolved around permitting taxes to rise to Clinton-era levels on incomes above $400,000, the level in Obama's last offer to Republican House Speaker John Boehner before their negotiations fell apart earlier this month.

Hewlett-Packard?confirmed that the Justice Department is looking into its allegations that?Autonomy?engaged in accounting fraud prior to its acquisition by HP last year.

Apple?dipped after a Chinese court fined the iPhone maker $160,000 for hosting third-party applications on its App Store that were selling pirated electronic books, Xinhua news agency said. Apple shares have declined nearly 25 percent in the last three months. The stock hit an all-time high of $705 in mid-September.

Barnes & Noble?jumped after British publisher?Pearson?said it will buy a 5 percent stake in the bookstore chain's digital Nook and college bookstore businesses for $89.5 million. Separately, Barnes & Noble said it expects holiday sales to be below forecasts and that its Nook business will not meet prior full-year 2013 projections.

Among airlines, Raymond James raised its price target on?Delta Airlines,?Southwest Airlines,?U.S. Airways,?Spirit Airlines?and?Alaska Air.

On the economic front, pending home sales rose to the highest level in more than 2-1/2 years, climbing 1.7 percent in November, according to the National Association of Realtors.?

And the Institute for Supply Management-Chicago said its index of Midwest business activity rose to 51.6 in December from 50.4 in November, edging past expectations for 51.0.

Apple withdraws patent claim against Samsung's Galaxy S III mini

Apple's patent claim against Samsung's Galaxy S III mini is no more, with Cupertino citing the phone's lacking availability in the US for the amendment to its original November filing. In the ongoing litigation between the two electronics giants, Samsung argued that it's Galaxy S III mini didn't warrant inclusion in the latest volley of Samsung devices Apple wants added to its patent lawsuit; Apple apparently agreed, and is thusly withdrawing its claim against that particular device. The argument also highlights the sad news that the S III mini won't join Samsung's Galaxy lineup in the US.

An agreement filing spotted by Reuters from a San Jose, CA. US District Court revealed today's news, coming just days after Judge Lucy Koh dismissed a request to permanently ban sales on several Samsung devices. It's unclear if the other Samsung devices Apple asked to be added to the ongoing case are approved yet by the court, but we can certainly count the S III mini out for the time being.

We entirely sympathize with that wish, so we?re inviting you on an amazing journey that will stay with you forever: going out on a sunny morning to swim with wild dolphins. You can see the dolphins throughout the morning, but the specialized swimming with dolphins cruises only operate between 7 am and 8:30 am. By 10:30, the dolphins start to move beyond the reef to hunt for schooling fish. The two species you will meet during this cruise are spinner dolphins and bottlenose dolphins.

Noted dive sites are located just a ten-minute boat ride from the hotel, offering a kaleidoscope of corals and fish, including tuna, barracuda, king fish and small white sharks, as well as magnificent eagle rays.

Baltimore's Washington Monument Damaged When Dozing Driver Crashes Into Wall

A car crashed into a Washington Monument park wall on Thursday at approximately 10 a.m., overturning and injuring a passenger and damaging the historic monument.

The flipped over four-door gray sedan blocked traffic on Washington Place just south of the 178-foot column to West Centre Street for at least an hour while police investigated and roped off a damaged stone wall in the park's South Garden.

Two men were in the car, which was a rental vehicle licensed in Connecticut, when the driver fell asleep and crashed into the wall, causing the car to flip over, police spokesman Det. Vernon Davis said. The driver was uninjured but paramedics transported the passenger to University of Maryland Medical Center with neck and back injuries.

No one else was involved or injured. Davis did not know if either men wore seat belts. Both air bags in the four-door sedan could be seen visibly deployed at the crash scene, where the bumper and a tire had broken off from the crumpled car.

Police roped off the areas of the park near the accident and warned people that the stone wall was in danger of falling. Davis acknowledged that the historic park was damaged but it was too soon to estimate the extent.

The Washington Monument column was built in 1829. The wall the car struck, just south of the column, is part of the smaller Lafayette Monument, built on one of the park's four squares. Dedicated in 1924, the Lafayette Monument features a bronze sculpture of the famous French aristocrat and military officer riding a marching horse. The Marquis de Lafayette served as a major-general in the Continental Army under George Washington and was also a powerful liaison to France, garnering French support that helped the Continental Army defeat the British.

In a Dec. 5 op-ed article in the Baltimore Sun, Mark R. Fettig, a founding board member and vice president of the Mount Vernon Place Conservancy, dedicated to restoring and maintaining the Washington Monument, said the park had fallen into disrepair and was in drastic need of restoration. Working with the city, his group proposed a $3 million public-private restoration project of which $1.5 million has already been raised.

Everything Cebu | 30 Kitchen + Bar

The cozy little place in Banilad, Cebu City, known as 30 Kitchen + Bar has a diverse menu with at least something for almost anyone to enjoy. An article on circuitmag.net mentioned that the eclectic menu is due to owners Quinito Moras and Jennise Mesina basing it on food that they themselves would have in their own kitchens.

30 kitchen bar 30 Kitchen + Bar

Since the menu at 30 Kitchen + Bar has been described as eclectic, you probably would like at least some idea of what to expect. The menu is divided into the categories below:

appetizers
salads
soups
?heavy belly? meals (with a choice of plain or garlic rice, toast, or fries)
sandwiches
pasta
desserts

You can see some customer photos of dishes from 30 Kitchen + Bar uploaded onto the foodspotting.com Web site. The mouthwatering photos feature some of the ?heavy belly? meals like chicken tenders, herb-crusted chicken, Cyprus chicken, Swedish meatballs, tenderloin steak, and pan-seared pork steak with demi-glace sauce.

At 30 Kitchen + Bar, the menu includes sandwiches ?for those days when you just can?t make up your mind.? If you?re the type who?s fond of bread with some chunky, substantial fillings, circuitmag.com recommended the Constantine, which is a large sandwich consisting of thinly sliced US Angus beef, onions, tomatoes, lettuce, and cucumber with creamy garlic, barbeque sauce, and chili sauce, all stuffed into panini-style bread. The resto-bar?s panini selection thoughtfully included a vegetarian option: eggplant, cucumber, lettuce, tomato, onions and cheese in grilled focaccia, with a side of homemade potato chips (these are actually included with all orders of the resto-bar?s paninis and Monte Cristo sandwiches). You?d probably be able to figure out that the resto-bar?s particular specialty is its French toast, because of the number of scrumptious variations formulated for it:

strawberries and cream
strawberries, chocolate and cream
banana, caramel and cream
apple-cinnamon and cream
apple-cinnamon, chocolate and cream
apple-cinnamon, caramel and cream
chocolate and cream
mangoes and cream
chocolate, mangoes and cream
Nutella and cream
Nutella, mangoes and cream
Nutella, bananas and cream
Nutella, strawberries and cream
banana, mangoes and caramel

The menu at 30 Kitchen + Bar states that only homemade fruit jam is used for the French toast. If you want to add a scoop of ice cream to the already rich dessert, you can do that too, for an additional fee. Admittedly, the menu is not really for dieters, but that?s just the way it is sometimes.

People on the Web site foursquare.com shared their suggestions for menu choices from 30 Kitchen + Bar. For pasta dishes, the top three seemed to be

sausage and spice pasta (penne and spicy sausage in tomato sauce)
? la casa pasta (with Spanish sardines in olive oil with chili flakes)
Temptation pasta (with bacon, ham, and mushrooms in white sauce)

? la casa pasta also seemed to be called Pasta 30 by some people since it?s evidently the house pasta. Incidentally, the resto-bar?s menu claims there is a pasta dish for every mood. As for entr?es, Cyprus chicken (pan-seared breast fillet with olives in tomato sauce, topped with mozzarella) and champignon pork (pan-seared pork chops with peppered mushroom saut?) got the most mentions. An additional tip from foursquare is to look for Tata and request for your potato wedges, buffalo wings, or even chicken-fried steak to be served Don Que style. This style apparently involves pairing some extra spicy gravy with these appetizing treats.

Since the place is also a bar, as stated clearly in its name, it serves beer, cocktails, shooters, and shots as well as coffee or tea and other refreshments. In spite of the perfectly adequate alcohol selection, many of the foursquare.com users are quite fond of the bottomless iced tea at 30 Kitchen + Bar. The drink has been described as having just the right sweetness that is not cloying.

The resto-bar opens at 3 p.m. for afternoon coffee and closes around 1 p.m. so you can drop in for a late dinner if necessary. If you?re going there for the very first time, you might in fact go past this place without even knowing it since you can?t see the signage unless you?re already right in front of it. The location of 30 Kitchen + Bar is before the entrance of Paradise Village, Banilad Road, Cebu City. Look on your left before you get past the village guardhouse and you?ll see 30 Kitchen + Bar next to the Caminade pet shop. For inquiries, you may call telephone number (032)518-8975 or 239-0057.

As of September 2012, a newer 30 Kitchen + Bar location had opened at The Gallery, in Mabolo, Cebu City. This space is located next to the Yu-Yu-Tei Japanese Restaurant.

Winning the arms race with spam

Spammers are tricky adversaries: If e-mail spam filters seek out words like ?enlargement? then spammers switch up their approach. ?Spam changes a lot ? it starts looking more like ham,? said Richard Colbaugh on December 5. Now Colbaugh and Kristin Glass, both of Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, have created a one-two punch that anticipates new tactics and makes antispam programs less predictable. Training filters, for example, to look for bits of ham mixed with spam, such as several nonspammy words, will help detect even cleverly disguised spam. And instead of using one superior filter all the time, spam fighters should mix up their weaponry. Keeping several filters on hand can keep spammers from deducing and evading antispam tactics.

When paid sick leave pays

Paid sick leave is an HR dilemma. The policy can keep an infection from spreading and limit medical costs, but it also lowers productivity, especially when employees intent on playing hooky abuse it. Computer simulations of how an epidemic might spread through Miami suggest that paid sick leave usually pays off. It typically curtails a disease?s spread and minimizes health costs without crippling work output, Achla Marathe of Virginia Tech reported December 5. But if a company offers more days than infections usually last and employees are both highly productive and dishonest about being sick, then paid sick leave does little good.

5 Tips for Finding A Home-Business-Friendly House

While you can run a home business from anywhere, including a den or your bedroom floor, it?s ideal to have a home that caters to your specific business needs while housing your family comfortably. Thus, when looking for a home that best suits your business, you?ll want to consider more than room sizes or nearby playgrounds; there are a number of business-related aspects to take into consideration, as well; from space for your necessary office furniture to internet access.

Easy Security Implementation

Having your livelihood within your home gives a new meaning to basic home security systems. Not only is there a family to protect, but your entire income. When seeking out a new house for your family and your business, you want to be sure that extreme security measures can be taken, or are already in place.

Look for houses that sit back on the lot or have good coverage from trees and shrubbery. Also consider homes that have locking gates already in place, which will aid in the security process.

Easy to Network

Your business needs to be connected in every sense of the word. However, some back country homes have less access to internet and cell phone coverage than a home closer to town. Be sure that the house is able to get cable, internet and cell phone coverage before making any other considerations.

Appropriate Internal Office Space

It may not seem important to have space for a home office, but a successful small business can benefit in more ways than one from having this designated area. Not only is it beneficial for you to have one place for work and one place for ?home? but it?s also tax deductible.

According to Smallbusiness.chron.com, ?If you have a designated space from which to run your home business, you may qualify for deductions on your federal tax return.? So, to make the most of that, you want to a home with extra space. Look for a finished garage or basement, spare room, alcove or den.

Proper Zoning?

Running a business from the home means there are any number of zoning issues to take into account, as well. From restriction of commercial vehicles to visitor capacity, there is more to consider than neighborhood politics. To ensure the home is business-safe, check with the zoning office and then move to the home owners association if necessary.

Easy Going Neighborhood

Though your business may not currently require the space for clients, customer visits, or commercial vehicles right now, there?s no telling how it will grow in the near future. From home expansion to new business vehicles, be sure to find a neighborhood that is tolerant to this sort of activity, to avoid any issues in the future.

When choosing the right house for your home-business you?ll need to consider more than just yard space or room sizes. You?ll also want to take into account zoning, security and extra working space outside of just the main living areas. But, when you know what to look for, you can find the right how for your family and your business.

www.iobit.com Welcome one and all to the first episode of Home Improvement! What more can I say? Oh I know what I can say? I really don?t know what happened with the audio. Clearly at the beginning of the video, its fine, but slowly it becomes more and more off-sync with the video. Personally, I dont even know how that is possible, since that means the audio is going FASTER than the video, which makes little to no sense to me. Regardless, I will see what I can do to get it fixed, thanks for toughing it out. I really did not want to delete the episode and start over, so I appreciate your understanding. :D

2012: The year malware surged 'dramatically'

3 hrs.

December is "prediction season" in the cybersecurity industry. Every major anti-virus software maker and digital-security provider issues its own forecasts of what computer users face in the coming year.?

So far this month, the predictions for 2013 look a lot like those for 2012: more?Android malware, increased cyberattacks by nation-states and greater activity by "hacktivist" groups such as Anonymous.?

However, a few companies go back and check their own predictions at the end of the year to see what they got right ??and wrong.?

One company that does so is Moscow-based Kaspersky Lab, one of the top five anti-virus companies in the world.?

"In 2011, we really saw a number of things rising up: hacktivism; big?database breaches; attacks against Androids; attacks against Macs; data espionage became daily business in 2011," said Roel Schouwenberg, senior researcher at Kaspersky's Boston-area office. "When we look at 2012, we saw a further evolution of all these new trends."?

Kaspersky made the following predictions for 2012:?

  • Hacktivist?groups, who attack computer systems for political or social reasons, would continue to increase their activities?
  • A higher rate of "advanced persistent threat" attacks, or state-sponsored espionage efforts?
  • More incidents of cyberwarfare involving customized, state-sponsored malware?
  • Attacks on software and game developers such as Adobe, Microsoft, Oracle and Sony?
  • More aggressive actions from law-enforcement agencies against cybercriminals?
  • An increasing rate in the growth of threats to the Android mobile platform?
  • Successful attacks on Apple's Mac OS X computer platform?

Let's examine five of the top security incidents that shaped 2012 and check the accuracy of the Kaspersky researchers in light of those predictions.?

1. More Mac OS X malware
Security experts had anticipated an outbreak of malware targeting Mac OS X for years; 2012 was when it finally happened.?

The bug that did it, called the?Flashback or Flashfake Trojan, first appeared near the end of 2011, but didn't reach its peak rate of infection until March of 2012.?

Flashback infected more than 700,000 Macs around the world, the largest known Mac OS X infection to date.?

"In 2011, we predicted that we would see more Mac malware attacks," said Kaspersky Lab's Costin Raiu and David Emm in a?blog posting. "We just never expected it would be this dramatic."?

Why did Flashback wreak such havoc??

One reason was a well-documented Java vulnerability, which Apple took a long time to patch even after it had been publicly disclosed. The Flashback authors took advantage of Apple's delay to incorporate the Java exploit into their otherwise unremarkable creation.?

The second reason was the general?lack of awareness among Mac users?about security. Proper anti-virus software would have stopped Flashback's attack, yet most Mac users felt they didn't need it.?

Flashback wasn't the only successful attack on Mac OS X systems in 2012. There were multiple espionage-related attacks on Macs used by Tibetan dissidents and exiles. Some of the attacks used corrupted files purporting to?come straight from the Dalai Lama, Tibet's exiled leader.?

"The espionage angle may be a bigger factor for Mac right now than regular consumer malware," Schouwenberg said. "For general cybercrime, most criminals go after Windows because that's what they know. That's what's easiest for them."?

"But when it comes to these targeted attacks, the attackers go after whichever machines the targets are using. So if the targets are using Macs, they'll go after Macs."?

Schouwenberg said in terms of the proportion of available systems infected, Flashback was the most successful malware outbreak of the year.?

"When you look at relative market share, the Flashback malware in terms of prevalence was the size of [the infamous Windows worm]?Conficker," he said. "This was an absolutely huge event in the Apple world. When you extrapolate [the number of Macs infected] to Windows numbers, that's about 10 million."?

2. Cyberweapons: Flame??
Cyberwarfare is a term that often gets hyped up, especially when a politician or general is speaking.?

In fact, the?Stuxnet worm, which crippled an Iranian uranium-enrichment facility in the summer of 2010, was for nearly two years the only known cyberweapon that had destroyed anything.?

That changed this past spring, when a series of cyberattacks destroyed computer systems at oil facilities in Iran, as well as in the offices of the Iranian oil ministry.?

Wiper, the malware thought to be responsible for the attacks, was never found, although certain tell-tale signs indicated it was similar to Stuxnet and its cousin Duqu.?

During the investigation in May, however, researchers from Kaspersky, the Iranian computer emergency response team MAHER and the CrySyS Lab at Budapest University in Hungary discovered something else ?possibly the most sophisticated piece of malware ever seen. Kaspersky's team called it "Flame."?

The size, age and sophistication of Flame were startling. It was 20 megabytes in size, as large as a complex smartphone game, while most malware is only a few dozen kilobytes in size.?

Flame contained a dozen different modules that could be added and subtracted according to the task at hand, which made it extremely versatile as spyware.?

It could map out networks, index files, record audio and video, log keystrokes, take screenshots and archive emails and instant messages. When its job was done, it would destroy all signs of itself on any 32-bit Windows PC, and sometimes the host system as well.?

Yet despite its size, Flame was at least five years old at the time of its discovery ?an enormous amount of time for a piece of malware to be "in the wild."?

As?Raiu said in a press release, Flame was "an example of a complex malicious program that could exist undetected for an extended amount of time while collecting massive amounts of data and sensitive information from its victims."?

A couple of weeks after its discovery, Dutch researchers found that Flame's creators had pulled off a mathematical breakthrough.?

Using unknown techniques, Flame's creators had created a nearly-impossible?cryptologic collision?that allowed Flame to present itself as a signed, genuine Windows update package direct from Microsoft. No anti-virus software could have stopped it.?

?Gauss...?
In August, Kaspersky researchers found a highly sophisticated Trojan in the Middle East, this time spying on Lebanese banks.?

Like ordinary criminal banking Trojans, this new malware, which Kaspersky researchers dubbed "Gauss," stole online-banking credentials to break into accounts. Yet Gauss didn't steal any money ?just information.

In their year-end review, Raiu and Emmer said Gauss added a "new dimension to nation-state cyber-campaigns," even if it was nowhere as sophisticated as Flame.?

"It appears there is a strong cyber component to the existing geopolitical tensions ?perhaps bigger than anyone expected," they added.?

? and Shamoon?
That would prove to be an understatement. Later in August, Shamoon, a piece of especially destructive, yet simple, malware, made?its world debut.?

Named after a piece of text embedded deep in its code, Shamoon launched an attack against the state-owned Saudi Arabian oil company Saudi Aramco and destroyed data on more than 30,000 computers. ??

Shamoon was crude but effective. It searched an infected system for certain files, sent a list of those files to a remote server, and then methodically deleted key parts of the installed Windows system, rendering the infected machine useless.?

"You have the hacktivist movement claiming credit for that attack, which may or may not be the case," Schouwenberg said.?

"Shamoon wasn't really that sophisticated, but when you look at the relevance of the incidence, it's extremely, extremely important," Schouwenberg added, "especially when you consider the fact that Saudi Aramco announced just recently that they strongly believe that Shamoon's real target was to mess with the oil production rather than just sabotaging the machines in the corporate network."?

Kaspersky researchers said many details about Shamoon were still unknown, such as how the malware infected Saudi Aramco's systems in the first place, or who was behind the malware.?

Some observers suspect Iran created and used Shamoon as an attempt to cripple Saudi Arabia's oil production, which would cause oil prices to rise, benefiting cash-strapped Iran.?

3. Exponential growth in Android malware?
During 2011, there was an explosion in the number of?malicious threats against the Android platform. It was obvious that the trend would go on.?

Kaspersky, as well as most of its competitors, accurately predicted that the number of threats for Android would continue to grow at an alarming rate in 2012.?

"We predicted we would see an explosion in Android malware and that's what we saw," Schouwenberg said. "There is a huge amount of Android malware these days, although not anywhere near the amount of Windows malware that we see. But it's grown very dramatically."?

How dramatically??

"The number of samples we received continued to grow and peaked in June 2012, when we identified almost 7,000 malicious Android programs," Raiu and Emmer wrote. "Overall, in 2012, we identified more than 35,000 malicious Android programs, which is about six times more than in 2011."?

So why is there so much Android malware, and so little malware targeting its competition, Apple's iOS??

It's because?iOS is locked down tight. Apple oversees every part of the hardware and software development, and strictly controls which apps can be installed on iOS devices.?

Android, however, is a free-for-all. Dozens of manufacturers make hundreds of Android devices, and the operating system is a little different on each one. Manufacturers and cellular carriers?refuse to update Android?in a timely manner, resulting in security holes that are left unpatched for months or years.?

"Off-road" app markets flourish, especially in China where access to the official Google Play store is restricted. Google has belatedly tightened security in both Android itself and in the Google Play store, yet its efforts have a long way to go before they can match Apple's.?

Still, the tighter security in the latest versions of Android may be having an effect. Kaspersky's own figures show that while the number of new Android threats continued to grow in the second half of 2012, the rate of growth began to slow.?

4. Advanced persistent threats go quiet?
Advanced persistent threat hackers, i.e. cyberspies, were certainly active in 2012, yet didn't have the spectacular successes they'd had in previous years.?

Perhaps the most visible attack on Western targets was the discovery in September 2012 that two pieces of malware had been signed using a?valid Adobe code-signing certificate.?

Apparently, someone, somehow, had broken into an Adobe server and stolen authentication certificates.?

"This discovery belongs to the same chain of extremely targeted attacks performed by sophisticated threat actors commonly described as APT," wrote Raiu and Emmer. "The fact that a high profile company like Adobe was compromised in this way redefines the boundaries and possibilities that are becoming available for these high-level attackers."?

5. Data breach after data breach?
One thing that Kaspersky failed to anticipate in 2012 was the seemingly unending parade of huge data breaches involving companies and organizations with inadequate security.?

In early June, the business-networking website LinkedIn had?6.4 million passwords stolen. The passwords were encrypted, but in a very simple way that meant most could easily be deciphered.?

A day later, online-dating service eHarmony suffered a similar breach,?losing 1.5 million passwords, also poorly encrypted.?

In July, struggling Web giant Yahoo was embarrassed by a data breach that revealed?450,000 passwords?had been stored without any encryption at all. It wasn't entirely Yahoo's fault, since the database was acquired with the 2010 purchase of another company, but it was also evident that no one had bothered to check.?

Worst of all was the revelation in late October that vital personally identifiable information on?3.8 million adult residents of South Carolina, plus 1.9 million dependents and 700,000 businesses, had been stolen from the state tax agency.?

Entire tax records, containing names, addresses, dates of birth and, worst of all, Social Security numbers, were all stored unencrypted. Virtually the entire state population of 4.7 million people was put at grave risk of identity theft.?

Weeks after the breach was revealed, the state government was blaming the federal IRS for not providing strong security guidelines, and was itself being criticized by security experts for not revealing enough about what had happened.?

Looking back, and forward?
"There isn't too much that was shocking news over 2012, just these up-and-coming things [from] 2011 that really established themselves in 2012," Schouwenberg said. "But we also saw some examples of new nation-state [campaigns] like Flame and Gauss. But from my personal point of view, the most significant event of the year was Shamoon."?

As for 2013, "we expect the next year to be packed with high-profile attacks on consumers, businesses and governments alike, and to see the first signs of notable attacks against the critical industrial infrastructure," Raiu said in a company press release.?"The most notable trends of 2013 will be new examples of cyberwarfare operations, increasing targeted attacks on businesses and new, sophisticated mobile threats."
