Ex-Senegalese president denies he stole cars, art

DAKAR, Senegal (AP) ? The ex-president of Senegal won praise from around the world earlier this year when he gracefully conceded defeat, even picking up the phone to congratulate his longtime rival, a move that momentarily erased the memories of a violent election season.

The goodwill lasted less than a week, however. Just days after former President Abdoulaye Wade left the presidential palace this March, local TV stations began showing footage of empty rooms in the palace.

Accusations surfaced that Wade and his inner circle had made off with nearly all the cars in the government's garage, as well as art, furniture and other assets belonging to the state.

Wade broke his two-month-old silence on Friday in order to tell his side of the story to reporters, who were invited to meet him in the rococo villa where he is now living. He said that the dozens of cars that he and members of his party took were bought with his own funds, or else those of his party, and do not belong to the state. He said, moreover, that the two paintings he removed from the presidential palace were gifts offered to his wife by the king of Morocco.

And he categorically denied newspaper reports saying he and members of his administration had transferred 400 billion francs ($800 million) into foreign bank accounts.

The new government of Senegal issued a communique last month, giving 72 hours to former members of his administration to return the cars, or face having them seized.

"When I left the palace, they called me every name in the book ? car thief, art thief, vandal and embezzler of public assets ... I understand perfectly that when one ruler succeeds another, there is a need for exorcism ... I was ready to put up with certain things. It's human nature. But too much is too much. I will not allow my honor to be touched," said Wade, who sat in an upholstered chair next to his couture-wearing wife, as a small crowd of supporters occasionally clapped and cheered.

"I bought (these cars)," he said, explaining he paid around 600 millions francs ($1.2 million) for the dozens of luxury cars. "It's not the state. It's me. ... I gave them to my supporters, to marabouts. These vehicles belong to me. I can give them to whomever I want!"

Wade lost the March 25 runoff election by a landslide, a humiliating blow for a man that had once been so popular he could draw crowds numbering in the hundreds of thousands.

For weeks leading up to this year's presidential election, protesters calling for Wade to step down clashed with police, in violence that is deeply uncharacteristic for this normally peaceful republic on Africa's western shore.

One of the main complaints against him is that he allowed corruption to soar during his 12 years in office, at the same time that spiraling food prices made it so that large numbers of his countrymen could only afford to eat once a day.

The villa of marbled floors and fake Corinthian columns where he met reporters, for example, belongs to one of his former ministers. Houses in the tony neighborhood are known to sell for millions of dollars, and yet a minister's salary does not exceed $10,000 a month, according to local media.

The capital of this nation of 12 million is dotted with multistory buildings, complexes, and posh villas that are known to be owned by the men and women that were in Wade's inner circle.

Purchasing Houses For Returning Taxation Vs Committing in House ...

If you're established to get engaged with foreclosed investing, you're on the right monitor. House foreclosures are at an all-time high due to the latest downturn in the international economic system, and the chance of huge profits has never before been quite what it is in this present economical environment. The concern is, what street will you take - buying houses for back taxes, or by investing your money in mortgage foreclosures?

The obvious response is buying houses for back taxes, and here's why.

While getting mortgage foreclosed used to be a profitable business, present periods are displaying more and more property owners upside-down in their house mortgages. The value these people had in components decreased along with their ideals. Discovering your home foreclosed with any value still remaining in the bag is almost difficult presently.

Buying houses for back taxes, however, indicates usually never have your home and still have a ton of value remaining in them.

Why? Because at tax foreclosed revenue, home mortgages are removed - mortgage organizations make sure the transaction of past due taxes on a residence before it ever creates it to tax buy, making qualities that have no mortgage on them by time the buy comes around. Also, often periods the rear taxes due are the only economical debt on these houses; qualities without your home are most likely without any other liens.
So what do we do now? How do we get this property?

Most will likely have very little achievements at the tax deed/lien buy itself. A coordinator of huge tax residence economical commitment organizations will have long done their due persistence and investigated the top qualities to get. They would be willing to create a lesser roi than you are - in other terms, would likely be outbid. This shouldn't quit you from seeking to get tax property-- you basically have to be a little more innovative.

Why not try something along these collections. Find the property immediately from the proprietor - but delay until after the tax buy. This way, you avoid the need for aggressive market bidding process. And by time their residence has already been "sold" at tax buy, these property owners are more than willing to rid themselves of their tax responsibility and would rather see you with the residence instead of dropping it to the govt.

You will often observe that most these entrepreneurs have already approved the loss of components and basically want to put the bad reminiscences behind them. They are inspired to offer, and to offer for inexpensive. Not only do you help someone in need, but you also create a sensible economical commitment shift.

The present foreclosed amount won't last permanently - take benefits of it now.

Self Improvement & Memory Training: Between Whats Real and - Tags

Being perfectly candid, I can say, though I have a fit-looking body, I would love to lose 20 pounds ? get it off and keep it off. I do love food. It?s a perplexing dichotomy to me that I can be both happy enough looking in the mirror to justify undisciplined eating habits, yet unhappy enough also to want to lose those 20 pounds.

Between what is real and how I feel isn?t much but it?s enough to keep me from my goals, until, that is, I decide once and for all what I want. I believe we all have situations where we battle with what?s real and how we feel about it ? being that there is often a gap we find incredibly hard to bridge.

It might be that we?re single and yet yearn to be in a relationship. It might be that we have a health problem and just wish to be healthier than we can be. We may be at a loss to change something about us, and the reality we detest, yet there just doesn?t seem any way to make the change or accept the way we are or the cards we?ve been dealt.

LIFE IS A PARADOX

This is no answer, but it does point out an important fact that can help. If we accept our realities, that acceptance can influence how we feel. On the other hand, if we decide we cannot accept our realities, and we do wish to drive ourselves to change, our feelings can influence our realities. With motivation we can achieve change slowly over time.

But life is a paradox, in that our realities, however good they are, are never really satisfactory; not to us. Sure, to others what we have and many of the problems we have are interpreted differently. But it?s our lives. We?re the ones needing to live in our skin, thinking and feeling as only we can.

Between what?s real and how we feel is a gap, and an opportunity, to be worked on. Both acceptance and the challenge to change can reduce this gap. We could even do both. Anything to reduce the level of felt insanity that we deal with on a daily basis ? the self-talk that runs rampant between both places ? our realities and how we feel about them.

COMMITTING TO REDUCING THE GAP

Reducing the gap between what?s real and how we feel is an important step in our process for contentment. Being aware of this gap can send us out of our minds, unless we choose to do something about it.

Committing to change and to create new more satisfying realities is acting on the feelings we?re not happy with. We either change or accept; making the decision is the most important thing. But then the decision must be worked out. It?s a process taking time; our entire lives in many cases.

Bridging the gap between what is real and how we feel is the spiritual conquest of our lives. Beyond our commitment and our process is the grace of God to get us there ? to acceptance or change or a combination of both.

Don't Expect Your Life Insurance Today To Cover You Tomorrow ...

It?s always nice to plan for our future and work towards our personal goals, but what are we really working towards?

As we get older our personal needs and goals change, but did you ever think that those individual goals are very typical for our age and life stage?

A life stage is a milestone in our life that is usually determined by our age, our career aspirations, as well as our future financial goals and our past financial achievements.?

Each new milestone in our lives such as graduating from college, buying a house, getting married, or planning for retirement represents a different life stage. Our financial needs, our insurance needs, and our financial priorities change with each different life stage.

Life Insurance is not only for older people who are planning their retirement or planning for their final estate expenses.??According to?TD Insurance?Life Insurance is a vital aspect of every life stage from starting out in our early 20?s to preparing for retirement in our late 50?s.

When we are first starting out our professional and financial lives after graduation we may not be able to afford the total amount of life insurance coverage that we actually need to cover our debts and expenses in case of an unfortunate event.? However we should try to purchase at least a basic life insurance policy that will cover our final costs (such as our funeral expenses) if ever an unfortunate event occurs.? Ideally we should also have enough life insurance to cover the costs of our student loans so that we don?t leave our loved ones with debt.

As we become stable in our career and we start to accumulate assets, our life insurance needs may change.? We may have the option to purchase group life insurance through our employer and this may be the most cost efficient way to purchase life insurance.? If we purchase assets such as a home or a car which have a loan or mortgage attached to them we may want to purchase life insurance in order to cover the debts in the case of an unfortunate event.

As we get older our debt balances will decrease as the value of our liquid and fixed assets will increase, during this time our?life insurance needs?may once again change.? We will not need life insurance to cover our mortgage loan once the loan is paid off.? Maintaining life insurance and paying the monthly or annual life insurance premiums can be a very expensive cost, especially if the expense is an unnecessary expense.? If we want to leave a financial legacy to a loved one after we are gone we may be able to do so with the accumulated value of our assets, and therefore life insurance may not be necessary.

Just like any other financial product, there has to be a need for life insurance before we incur the additional expense of life insurance premiums.? If you are preparing for final funeral and tax expenses, if you want to pay off any outstanding debts, or if you would like to leave a financial legacy to your loved ones then life insurance may be a smart financial planning strategy; otherwise life insurance premiums may just be an unnecessary additional expense.

(AP) ? Harvard University alumni attending their 50th class reunion this week are getting updates on classmates ? including Unabomber Ted Kaczynski.

Kaczynski graduated in 1962 and is locked up in the federal Supermax prison in Colorado for killing three people and injuring 23 during a nationwide bombing spree between 1978 and 1995. In an alumni directory, he lists his occupation as "prisoner" and says his awards are "Eight life sentences, issued by the United States District Court for the Eastern District of California, 1998."

Harvard's alumni association said all class members, including Kaczynski, were invited to submit entries for the class report, distributed for reunion activities during commencement week. But it said it regrets including his references to his convictions.

"While all members of the class who submit entries are included, we regret publishing Kaczynski's references to his convictions and apologize for any distress that it may have caused others," the Harvard Alumni Association said in a statement Wednesday evening.

A Harvard spokesman said the update was submitted by Kaczynski but could not immediately say how the university confirmed that. A message seeking comment was left with Kaczynski's attorney.

Kaczynski is a Harvard-trained mathematician who also got master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Michigan.

He lived as a recluse in a Montana cabin, railed against technology and led authorities on the nation's longest and costliest manhunt. He was caught in 1996 when his brother recognized his idiosyncratic writings and tipped off authorities.

Kaczynski pleaded guilty two years later to avoid a trial at which his lawyer had planned to offer an insanity defense. The guilty plea also saved him from the death penalty.

Items seized from his cabin were auctioned last year by the U.S. Marshals Service for more than $200,000 to benefit his victims.
